NYC's subways have never made much of an effort to accommodate people in wheelchairs, who ride the buses instead...
The hydraulic lift systems are extremely good and everyone is used to making room for a wheelchair passenger...this is not the subway after all.
Also, during the Koch administration as I remember they started this massive program in Manhattan of knocking down all curbs of city streets and avenues at intersections and making them gently inclined so wheelchairs could go up them easily.
It is the least we can do...being wheelchair bound seems really awful to me...
