Another Wall Street tower conversion to residential use: 63 Wall Street

You know, it looks to me that ever since Hurricane Sandy a lot of businesses have wanted to move out of the flood-vulnerable far downtown area and the space is being made over into residential units. 

I guess the people who want these residences are fully prepared to deal with another scenario such as after Sandy. Or maybe they are just in denial!

  Let me see if I can find anything about history of 63 Wall Street...it may not merit any big architectural review but who knows...

The Wall and Hanover Building located at 63 Wall Street in New York City was built in 1929. It was designed by architects Delano & Aldrich and has 37 floors.
The building was built, owned and occupied as the headquarters of Brown Brothers & Co., a merchant bank that became Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., a private bank, by merger in 1931. BBH continued to occupy the building, then known as 59 Wall Street, until 2003 when it moved to 140 Broadway. BBH established a family of mutual funds in 1983 and named it after the building, as "59 Wall Street Funds". That fund family was later renamed "BBH Funds" in 2002 when the company made plans to relocate its headquarters.[2]
In 2003 and 2004, the building was converted to residential rental apartments by Metro Loft Management. The leasing company rebranded the building as The Crest, named for the ornate circular depictions on the outside of the building, and began using the address 63 Wall Street. The ground floor of the building is now retail space, including the United States Post Office for zip code 10005.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 16, 2005.

    I have lived in the Crest (63 Wall) for 2 years now and I am moving across the street to 20 Exchange (same management company) because I love Metro Loft Management so much! The doormen make me smile every time I enter the building. I have never experience a lost package and they are very kind to all of my guests. The doormen know everyone by name! Also, if I every need anything fixed (ie clogged shower drain), I simply submit an online request and someone is up to fix it within 2 hours! Average tenant here is about 30 - not like the dormitory environment at 2 Gold St.

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND! BEST PRICES IN FIDI FOR LUXURY RENTALS.

    Ah the Crest.

    When I was just a midwestern lad with high aspirations for success in the big city, my first apartment in NY was at the Crest. The name says it all, right? The crest of upscale urban living... A luxury community for young professionals... Or something.

    So let me break down my review into categories:

    LOCATION (2 stars)
    Anyone who has lived in the FiDi knows well enough that it leaves much to be desired. Although the area is relatively quite, clean, and safe, there are only about 2 bars in the area (if you have lived down there, you know which two). You will find yourself taking a lot of cabs.

    BUILDING (3 stars)
    This is one of those office buildings that was renovated to be apartments, and the renovation was done during 2000/2001 I think. So the apartments are relatively new, but they are pretty bare bones. My place was really not that much different than a dorm room.

    AMENITIES (4 stars)
    Yeah, they had a bunch of stuff here. A rooftop deck, tenant lounge (with pool tables, wireless, tv, etc), screening room, and fitness center. So that was pretty good, especially if you think you'll ever use that stuff (we usually didn't).

    PEOPLE (4 stars)
    Funny story: when I first moved in the landlord was like "there are a lot of single women here, most of them asians". So that was weird, but he was right. The reason I give four stars is because this was basically a dorm. Lots of young people who just moved here who still know how binge drink. We made some good friends.

    There are only 2 types of people I would recommend to live here:

    1) People who work downtown
    2) People just moving to NY and who can't afford anything better

    If you aren't in those two groups, you really should live somewhere else.
