This Weekend: Music, History and Drones!

Make the most of August with a getaway to Governors Island! Explore the Hills, enjoy a picnic or check out some of the eclectic happenings on the Island this weekend: historic walking tours, a music festival, live storytelling with former Coast Guard service members and The National Drone Racing Championships.

Drone Racing

Saturday 8/6 - Monday 8/8 from 10am-5pm
Don't miss the 2016 U.S. National Drone Racing Championships! Catch high-speed races and freestyle competitions, meet with pilots, learn about drone technology or simply lean back at the beer garden and watch the drones fly by.

Brooklyn ARTery Storytelling and History

Saturday 8/6 from 11:30-5:30pm
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Army turning Governors Island over to the Coast Guard, Brooklyn ARTery has invited former service member residents and author of the Governors Island Explorer Guide, Kevin Fitzpatrick, to share stories about what life was like living on the Island.  MORE HERE

Brooklyn Music Fest

Sunday 8/7 from 12pm-5pm
Rock out with an all-Brooklyn lineup that is as diverse as the borough itself, spanning genres such as rock, soul, punk and hip hop. Headliners include the Lez Zeppelin, Shinobi Ninja, Greg Banks and G House NYC. Learn more and purchase tickets.

Lower Manhattan Celebrates on the Island

On July 30 NYC Councilmember Margaret S. Chin (District 1 – Lower Manhattan) celebrated the 7th Annual Lower Manhattan Community Day with a picnic attended by 50 LMC residents. As a Trust Board Member, Councilmember Chin has been a long-time advocate of transforming Governors Island into a shared space. Thanks to Councilmember Chin for her tremendous support and to everyone who joined!

Friends of Governors Island Furniture Drive

The Friends of Governors Island are moving to the Island and building their office from scratch. They're looking for furniture and office accessories like desk chairs, filing cabinets and lamps. Home furniture is also welcome. Email emma@friendsgi.org for pick-up logistics and a tax receipt. Thank you!
