“I woke up in the bedroom and the carpet was engulfed in fire. I started to cry, I didn’t know what to do. I tried to save my sister but I couldn’t get to her. Firefighter Wiener was an angel, he took me away and brought me out, and brought me back to life. He’s an angel sent from Heaven - him and other Firefighters who go out and risk their lives every single day. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him.” - Arif Wedderburn, 23, who was reunited today at Engine 214 and ...

He’s an angel sent from Heaven - him and other Firefighters who go out and risk their lives every single day. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him.” - Arif Wedderburn, 23, who was reunited today at Engine 214 and Ladder 111 with retired FDNY Firefighter Erik Wiener, who saved his life 20 years ago. Firefighter Wiener spent his career at Ladder Company 111 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, but was detailed to Engine 283 on that fateful evening. After saving Arif’s 16-year-old sister, Yanique, who was found dangling upside down outside of a window on the 8th floor of their apartment building, Firefighter Wiener crawled through thick smoke and zero-visibility conditions, searching entirely by feel, to find young Arif unconscious on the floor. Firefighter Wiener tucked the boy underneath his jacket and gave him his facepiece to help him breathe, then crawled with him through the flames and outside to safety. The fire was so intense that Firefighter Wiener received second-degree burns to his back, despite wearing his bunker gear. Said Firefighter Wiener, “I’m not comfortable with being called ‘brave.’ I don’t think that what I did that night was brave. I was just being a professional. I was a professional Firefighter. It was always an honor to put the uniform on, and it’s still an honor today. I was never an individual. We came, we did what we do, and we left. We did our job.” Arif’s mother, Ivion Davis, thanked Firefighter Wiener for rescuing her children, saying, “You tore the oxygen mask from your face and placed it on the face of my son. You gave us back our son. If your stellar career was meant for this one save, then for my family and I, it has been worth it.” Read more at http://ow.ly/86G63009inu [web page]'](https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-0/s160x160/13177631_10154094659640729_7419197809906669821_n.jpg?oh=f17d5d7fdd25abb6993482735f50c9f4&oe=57E14003)
