Integration courses: 4,000 newcomers fined

The vast majority of newcomers comply with their obligations under Flemish law. In all 90,000 newcomers signed an integration contract after they settled in Flanders. Only 4,000 people were fined because they failed to attend lessons enough.

Deputy Premier pleads with business to create jobs

Deputy premier Kris Peeters has said that Belgian wage costs have fallen to such a degree that businesses should create new jobs. Mr Peeters was responding to the words of Karel Van Eetvelt of UNIZO, the organisation of small and medium-sized businesses.

Yes, the bluebells currently blooming at the Hallerbos are pretty. We would even go as far as saying they are very, very pretty and a definite must-see. But people, please, stay on the paths! Doel 3 won't re-open until Saturday

The Doel 3 nuclear reactor will probably be started up again on Saturday. Previously Engie-Electrabel that operates the reactor had said that it would be started up again by Friday afternoon.

Parliamentary Commission members visit Maalbeek metro station

The members of the Parliamentary Commission that is investigating the 22 March terror attacks walked from the Federal Parliament to the Maalbeek Metro station at 12 noon on Friday. The Speaker of the Chamber of Representatives Siegfried Bracke and the Chairman of the Commission Patrick Dewael laid wreaths in honour of those that had died.

Airport railway station reopening

The station at Zavemtem Airport, near Brussels re-opened to passengers on Friday afternoon. This is a month to the day since suicide bombers caused death and destruction in the departure lounge at Belgium’s biggest airport.

Maalbeek metro station re-opens on Monday

The Maalbeek metro station that was the scene of one of the 22 March attacks will re-open to passengers again on Monday 25 April. The station was damaged when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside the carriage of an underground railway train during the morning rush hour.

Stefania Tunnel won’t open before August

The Stefania Tunnel that runs under the first part of the Louizalaan in Uptown Brussels will remain closed for at least another four months. Previously the Brussel Regional Transport Minister Pascal Smet (Flemish socialist) had suggested that work to stabilise the tunnel should be completed sometime in May.

There was a lot at stake in Thursday evening’s Play-off I game between AA Gent and Sporting Anderlecht. Victory for the home side AA Gent would have seen them go second and move to within a point of the league-leaders Club Brugge, while a win for Sporting Anderlecht would have seen them go top.
