UK terror suspects believed to have links to Brussels terror cell

Five people have been arrested by police in the United Kingdom on suspicion of having links to the terrorist cell that carried out the Paris attacks on 15 November 2015 and the Brussels and Zaventem attacks on 22 March this year. Four of those detained were arrested in Birmingham, in the English Midlands.

The German weekly news magazine ‘Der Spiegel‘ reports that two chauffeurs working for the European Parliament were dismissed earlier this week after it emerged that they were in possession of propaganda material published by the Islamist terror group IS.

Airport should be fully operational by the end on June

The Brussels Airport Company that runs Zaventem Airport, near Brussels says that the airport should be operating at full capacity again by the end of June. In a few weeks, the departure lounge that sustained severe damage in the 22 March terrorist attack should be back in use.

Extra liaison officer to be sent to Turkey

The Belgian liaison officer in Turkey is to be given back-up in the form of an extra colleague. News that the liaison officer is to become a liaison team appears in Saturday’s edition of the daily ‘Het Laatste Nieuws’. In the days that followed the 22 March attacks attacks, the Liaison Officer in Turkey came in for strong criticism from the Interior Minister Jan Jambon (Flemish nationalist).

Asylum-seekers evacuated out of West Flemish reception centre

A large police presence aided the evacuation of 357 asylum-seekers from the asylum reception centre at Sijsele in West Flanders on Saturday morning. They were taken to a sport centre in near-by Moerkerke. They were allowed to return shortly after midday.

An important win for AA Gent

In the first of this weekend’s Play-off I games, the reigning Champions AA Gent moved back up to second place after an at times hard-fought 2-0 win at home against KV Oostende. KV Oostende, that topped the league at one stage, have failed to take a single point from their first ever Play-off I campaign.

Royal Greenhouses open their doors to the public

From Friday 15 April until Friday 6 May the Royal Greenhouses open their doors to the general public. The greenhouses were built at the end of the 19th century at the request of Leopold II. They are a unique piece of architecture. The exotic plants in the greenhouses evoke memories of the colonial age.

WWI soldiers’ remains unearthed after more than a century

Workers digging a trench for a new gas pipeline in Langemark in West Flanders have unearthed the remains of 19 soldiers that were killed almost 101 years ago in the First World War. The nationality of 12 of the soldiers has been identified. 10 are British and 2 are German.

The Flemish DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have released the official Belgian national team song for this summer’s European Football Championships in France. The song is entitled ‘Melody’ and was recorded at the request of the Belgian Football Association.

Resignation “A logical decision”

The Green Group Leader in the Chamber of Representatives Kristof Calvo has described the decision of the Federal Transport Minister Jacqueline Galant (Francophone liberal) to resign as a logical decision. The Flemish Socialists say that the Minister’s resignation doesn’t mean that the Airport has become any safer.
