3 FFs INJURED AT NJ FIRE

News Video
Wednesday, January 13, 2016    Fueled by gusty winds on a frigid night,  a massive fire tore through a row of stores, displacing at least five people and hurting three firefighters in Irvington Wednesday morning.Authorities said a fire call came in at 1:45 a.m., with the blaze originating in the basement of Headquarters Bar and Grill on Florence Avenue. As many as 60 firefighters battled the blaze until it was brought under control around 4:30 a.m.

No residents were injured but three firefighters were hurt, two after slipping on ice and another due to frostbite to his hand.

The elements made the fire even more difficult to fight off. Winds recorded at 25 to 30 miles per hour helped fan the flames, according to Irvington fire chief John Tierney.

"Wind does create a problem, it actually flares up and hurts the power of our streams," Tierney said.

The blaze spread quickly to a total of six businesses on the first floor including another resta... [ more ]

These brave men and women put their lives on the line to help their communities.

Tuesday morning in Chatham County, one such volunteer firefighter, Joshua Woods, was responding to a call when his car crashed and he died.

In a WNCN exclusive, reporter Amy Cutler spoke with his mother.

The loss of Woods — who was also a married father of two children — is a big hit to the Siler City Fire Department. His ‘turn out’ gear was placed outside the fire station Tuesday night.

What Firefighters MUST Know About Bladder Cancer

Wednesday, January 13, 2016   By: Barry Stein, M.D., Urologist.

Firefighters are among the most prominent occupational groups at increased risk for bladder cancer. Surprisingly, many firefighters and their physicians are unaware of their risk for this cancer. Men get screened for prostate and colon cancers; they are not immune from lung cancer if they smoke or are exposed to tobacco smoke; and watch for signs of skin cancer. Yet, one of the most deadly cancers, if not detected early, is not on their cancer watch list. Bladder cancer is the forgotten cancer. How can this be? Unlike the “ribbon cancers” bladder cancer does not have a celebrity face or spokesperson, or the sponsorship from major pharmaceutical companies. There aren’t walks or runs, or major news coverage. Bladder cancer is one of the most deadly cancers, if not detected early and treated while the cancer is still confined to the bladder lining. If diagnosed in its early stages, bladder cancer has a five-year survival rate... [ more ]
