Ambulance hit in rock-throwing incident - Texas

Wednesday, January 13, 2016   AUSTIN – Austin police confirmed a second rock-throwing incident over the weekend involved a Williamson County EMS ambulance.

APD is working with federal and local agencies to find the person throwing rocks on I-35. There have been 52 incidents reported since June 2014.

According to police, the ambulance was hit with a rock along the 12300 block of North Interstate 35 around 1:20 a.m. Sunday. The address is near the Yager Lane/Tech Ridge Boulevard overpass and the Parmer Lane exit.

"Initially they weren't sure what it was. They thought it was just road debris," said Williamson County EMS Division Commander Ed Tydings.

It left a large dent in the hood. Tydings said it happened as the paramedics headed back from Dell Children's Medical Center after they dropped a patient off.

"First of all, what's scary to me is hitting the windshield and one of my paramedics actually getting seriously injured. Second of all, if we had a patient in the back and my paramedic was hit, that could have caused a real bad collision," Tydings said. "Ambulances take people that are already hurt so we don't want to have them hurt worse."

Anyone who is involved in a rock-throwing incident is asked to immediately pull over in a safe environment and call 911 to report it to police.

The other incident early Sunday morning occurred around 2 a.m. near St. Edward's University. The rock hit a person in the car but no one was hurt in this case either.

Two paramedics, patient injured in U.S. 23 crash - Michigan

Wednesday, January 13, 2016   By Lisa Roose-Church

Two Livingston County paramedics and a patient were transported to Ann Arbor hospitals after an ambulance crashed Sunday due to an ice-covered roadway.

Chief Jason Pless of the Green Oak Township Police Department said Monday that the paramedic driving the ambulance was treated and released from the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Livingston County EMS Director Jeff Boyd said the second paramedic was hospitalized at U-M, but was expected to be released Monday. The patient was hospitalized at Saint Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital on McAuley Drive in Ypsilanti.

Pless did not identify the paramedics or the patient, but he indicated that everyone involved received non-life-threatening injuries.

The paramedics were transporting the patient from the Saint Joseph Mercy Woodland Health Center in Genoa Township to Saint Joseph hospital in Washtenaw County at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday when the paramedic driving the ambulance lost control on southbound U.S. 23, just north of Eight Mile Road, which is the border for Livingston and Washtenaw counties.

The ambulance “slid off the road and went into a ditch where it turned over onto its side,” Pless explained.

Pless said there was gusting wind at the time as well as frigid 29-degree temperatures.

“It was a little nerve wracking to know you have staff rolled over in an ambulance,” Boyd said. “My thanks goes out to all who responded to help us.”

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Green Oak Township and Northville. Livingston County paramedics responded to the scene to transport their colleagues and the patient while Huron Valley ambulance also offered its service, which was not needed.

Boyd asked that people use the ambulance crash as a cautionary tale about safety, and he asked that motorists be careful.

“This should be a warning to all people on the roads that this can happen to anyone,” he said. “We were not running lights and sirens; we were just driving like any other person on the road.”

EMT, driver injured in I-65 crash - Indiana

Wednesday, January 13, 2016   By , jpaul@jconline.com

Two people were sent to the hospital Tuesday after a semi struck an ambulance on Interstate 65 in White County.

The crash occurred about 11:30 a.m. near the 192 mile marker, closing the southbound lanes of I-65 for nearly two hours. Indiana State Police say a semi driver disregarded emergency lights and struck an ambulance responding to an earlier accident.

An emergency medical technician was transported to an area hospital and is in serious condition, said Sgt. Kim Riley, ISP public information officer. A driver who was signing a waiver to refuse medical treatment was also injured, treated and released from an area hospital.

Riley said an earlier accident left a semi, an SUV and several emergency vehicles in the southbound lanes of I-65. The second semi "failed to reduce speed after seeing vehicles with emergency lights on," he said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Crash between ambulance, tractor trailer injures 3, kills 1 - New York

Wednesday, January 13, 2016   By Mark Belcher

EVANS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Dangerous roads led to multiple serious crashes on Tuesday evening, including a fatal collision between an ambulance and tractor trailer in the Town of Evans.

Officers responded to the crash scene just before 4:30 p.m. to find a Rural/Metro ambulance collided with a semi truck just off Route 20. Between both vehicles involved in the crash, officers say three people were transported to the hospital and a fourth was declared dead soon after the crash.

Fire officials on the scene say an elderly man in the back of the ambulance was the sole casualty.

“From what I understand, Rural/Metro was doing a home transport, and it did have a patient in the ambulance that was being transported from hospital to home,” Jack Hazard, assistant fire chief of North Evans Fire Company, said. “Not sure where they came from or where they were headed.”

Whiteout conditions are thought to be the catalyst of the crash. Investigation and cleanup afterwards forced officials to close Route 20 between Eden Evans Center and Sturgeon Point Road.

Cleanup for the crash took just over three hours, and investigation is continuing.

Monday, January 11, 2016   By Darcie Moran | dmoran@mlive.com

Two paramedics and a patient were hospitalized after a Livingston County ambulance crashed Sunday.

EMT struck by ATV on Youngstown sidewalk - Ohio

Monday, January 11, 2016   YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are looking for the drivers of two ATVs, one of which is believed to have intentionally struck an emergency medical technician on the sidewalk.

The Life Fleet EMT was at the scene of a crash in which a woman’s vehicle was struck by a van that left the scene following the crash. The crash occurred on Shirley Road and Poland Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday, according to a Youngstown Police report.

The woman was not injured in the crash, and she declined medical treatment. The EMT told police he was standing on the Center Street bridge filling out paperwork on the crash when he saw two black in color ATVs traveling at a high rate of speed on the sidewalk.

The EMT told police that he was struck by one of the ATVs as he tried to jump out of the way. The ATV dragged him about five to 10 feet and drove away, according to the police report.

The EMT said the woman who was struck by the van then got into her vehicle and drove away, without asking whether he was OK. He believed the ATV struck him intentionally.

Police said the EMT had ripped pants, cuts on his hands, and his glasses were damaged. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries.

The driver of the ATV was wearing a helmet, so he was unable to be identified at the time the report was filed.

Head-on crash with ambulance kills Excelsior Springs mother - Missouri

Thursday, January 7, 2016   EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- Friends and family are praying for the family of Teresa Howell, 28, a mother killed in a head-on collision with an ambulance Wednesday morning on Highway 92 near Excelsior Springs.

"They have to grow up without a mother," said Richard Truckowski, a family friend.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. Wednesday in rural Clay County between Kearney and Excelsior Springs on Highway 92.

Troopers say Howell had her two children, ages 5 and 6, with her when she lost control of her Ford Focus and slid into the oncoming lane, colliding head-on with a Kearney ambulance. The ambulance was not transporting a patient or rushing to an emergency call.

The crash on the icy hill may have been nearly unavoidable. An ambulance responding to the crash also slid off the road. No one in either ambulance was hurt.

"My wife and I had already prayed for the family and we believe that God will lead them through this, but it really hurts. It hurts us because we`ve known that family for years," said Truckowski.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said everyone in the car had their seat belts on. The driver of the ambulance involved in the crash was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but wasn't injured. The children were eventually transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital with minor and moderate injuries.

PMC ambulance driver not charged after crash with car at Rock Hill intersection - South Carolina

Tuesday, January 5, 2016   ROCK HILL A Piedmont Medical Center ambulance collided with a car at the intersection of Heckle Boulevard and Hollis Lakes Road about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Two people in a 2014 Lexus were taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte for treatment. Their conditions are not known and their names were not released by the Rock Hill Police Department.

Three Piedmont Medical Center employees were treated and released at PMC, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The ambulance was transporting a patient to PMC. That person was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a police report.

Amy Faulkenberry, Piedmont’s vice president of external relations, said Thursday, “Our thoughts remain with all those involved in yesterday’s accident involving the EMS vehicle. Other than confirming the treatment and release of the three EMS employees, unfortunately, we cannot provide any further information due to patient privacy laws.”

The accident happened about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday when a PMC ambulance, with its lights and sirens activated, approached the intersection of Heckle Boulevard and Hollis Lakes Road.

The ambulance driver, whose name was not released, said he was driving south on Heckle Boulevard going about 60-70 mph when he approached the intersection with Hollis Lakes Road. The driver told police he slowed down as he passed traffic on the left while he was in the southbound left turn lane. The driver said he saw the Lexus at the intersection and “believed it was going to stop,” according to the report.

The two vehicles collided, with both ending up in a ditch along the southbound lanes.

The driver of the Lexus was dazed and unable to provide details of the accident, according to the police report. Other drivers interviewed at the scene told police the Lexus proceeded into the intersection when the traffic light turned green. A driver told police she did not hear the ambulance’s siren, possibly due to the bad weather.

No one was charged in the crash, although police say the ambulance driver “failed to use due regard when proceeding through the intersection.”

The report also said that police officers “also believe” the driver of the Lexus was unaware of the approaching emergency vehicle due to his field of vision being blocked by another vehicle and the driver was unable to hear the ambulance’s siren due to the weather.
