FIREFIGHTERS GAIN SUPPORT IN TOXIC BATTLE

Thursday, January 7, 2016   With fewer than two weeks before a Jan. 19 deadline for comments, Fire Fighters are gaining allies in their campaign to ban toxic chemicals from the nation's furniture. The campaign, which started with a proposal from IAFF, several consumer groups and other organizations last year, is to convince the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to write rules to outlaw such chemicals. They endanger Fire Fighters' lives when they battle fires, especially dwellings. The prime result is cancer.

Of the 132 comments CPSC has received on its proposed rule so far, only one, from the American Home Furniture Alliance, opposes it. The alliance claims the rule is unnecessary. It contends its members already follow much tougher rules previously imposed by California.

The chemicals, called organohalogens, are in furniture, children's toys, mattresses, electronic product casings and other goods. When released and inhaled, they cause cancer.

MD FF OK AFTER FALL THRU ROOF IN PG

Thursday, January 7, 2016   Quick actions are credited with saving a Maryland firefighters who fell through the roof into an attic Tuesday afternoon.Firefighters including the RIT team lifted him up through the roof while making sure they weren't overloading it, said Mark Brady, spokesman for Prince George's County Fire/EMS.

The firefighter was assisted down a ladder where he was checked out by medics, who determined he could remain on the scene in Upper Marlboro.

"Fortunately, the firefighter that fell was wearing his full personal protective gear including his self-contained breathing apparatus with face piece on and breathing air. This firefighter was able to walk away from this “near miss” without injury, in large part, due to his donning full protective gear and using SCBA during roof operations," Brady said.
