Every fire department is different, sure.
That’s even more true for every volunteer department — they tend to be in some way a reflection of the personality of the city they serve.
However here are the "9 Guys You’ll Meet on Every Volunteer Fire Department"

It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that today Marion County Sheriff Department in Illinois is burying one of their own.
Sheriff Rich Stevenson says in 35 years of law enforcement last Wednesday January 20, 2016 was one of the hardest days in his career.
That's when tragically 22-year-old Adam Conrad of Sandoval, IL a member of the Marion County Sheriff's Department family, was killed.

January 23, 2005 was "Black Sunday" in New York
FDNY Lt. Curtis W. Meyran (covering Ladder 27 that day) and FF John G. Bellew (Ladder 27) died in the Line of Duty at an apartment fire in the Bronx.
Four other FF's were injured: Jeffrey Cool (Rescue 3) the late Lt. Joseph DiBernardo-Rescue 3 (whose later death is Line of Duty) Brendan Cawley (Ladder 27) and Eugene Stolowski (Ladder 27).

Ladder 39's rig was hit by a car earlier today while at a call on I-71. This is why fire departments use trucks as "blockers" on freeways. Who knows how many firefighters would have been injured, or worse, if the truck hadn't been there.

Sheriff Stevenson describes Adam as an excellent young man who had a promising career ahead of him. The sheriff questions how you can replace Adam, who everyone loved and who had such a wonderful smile.
Adam is believed to be the first Marion County Sheriff's Department employee to die in the line of duty when the Sheriff's Department transport prisoner van he was driving ran off icy freeway and collided with an on-coming semi.
Sheriff Stevenson says Adam was unconscious at the time he was extricated from the vehicle and never regained consciousness at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Before working full time at the Sheriff's department, Adam was a member of the Sandoval Fire and Ambulance Service and also worked as a part-time Sandoval Police Officer.
The Sheriff says he is certain Adam is looking down on us and smiling as fellow Officers, Fire Fighters and K9 stand in salute. And Stevenson says that show of support is just beginning.
Stevenson says if there is any solitude for what happened, it was Adam died doing a job he loved. But his life will live on in others. That's because Adam was an organ donor and several of his organs were harvested after his death to help others live.
The Sheriff says the assistance offered by State Police and other police and emergency service agencies across the local area and even across the country has been unbelievable. He says he can't thank them enough.
Stevenson reports nearby agencies have agreed to run the jail during the Saturday visitation and Sunday funeral so all members of the Sheriff's Department can attend. He's expecting a huge crowd.
Services celebrating the life of Adam Conrad have been set for today, 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Rock Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mater Dei High School, Sandoval Fire Department, The Rock Church, or the Carlyle Township City Cemetery fund.
Interment will follow at the Carlyle Township City Cemetery.

Who would have known in the early morning hours of January 23, 2005 we would lose two great men and four of us would be critically injured as we battled a fire in an illegally divided apartment without the benefit of having personally safety ropes.
Later that afternoon tragedy would strike again and we would lose another Brother in Brooklyn.
I wish I could say it ended there, but it didn't and we lost another Brother on November 22, 2011. Seven families have been changed forever.
Me and two other Brothers are blessed to still walk the face of the earth.
We struggle with pain, both physical and mental, yet we live to tell the story of that dreadful day and to carry on the memory of our Brothers that made the supreme sacrifice.
I know many of my Brothers that where there that day deal with the same pain Gene, Brendan and myself feel.
Please know that I would do the same fire with the same Brothers again today.
To the Meyran, Bellew, DiBernardo and Sclafani families please know that Curt,John,Joey and Richie will never be forgotten.
To Gene and Brendan , I'm glad you guys are here with me , because I know the dear Lord has another job for us here on earth to fulfill .
Rest Easy Curt , John , Joey and Richie and may the almighty Lord look down on your families and offer them comfort .
See you on the Floor Above, my Brothers.

!['It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that members of the Fremont County Fire Protection District in Wyoming are mourning the deep loss of much loved and respected Deputy Chief Clarence “Speed” Hartbank.
The 45-year member of the department passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in the afternoon after finally succumbing to the injuries he sustained when was commanding a September 10, 2015 grass fire.
While he was surveying damage to a ground-level bunker, he fell through a hidden / concealed area / hole and into the fire.
Deputy Chief Dan Oakley and Sheriff’s Deputy Donovan Detimore saw the incident occur and bravely went in and entered the bunker.
Fortunately they were able to pull Chief Hartbank out.
Chief Hartbank was flown to Swedish Medical Burn Center with second degree burns to 38% of his body.
He also suffered broken ribs and a lung injury.
Oakley and Detimore were taken to Riverton Hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
Despite many hopes and prayers, Speed passed away.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are now with the many friends and family left behind mourning his loss.
Rest in Peace Brother
We have the watch from here
