The Tribeca Tavern

I understand Tribeca has a lot of fancy restaurants...I chose this place just because of the name and because it feels right-- I mean, if there were a "Times Square Cafe" I would do a posting on that too.

What does Yelp say?People like it...I am sure there are classier places around, but you probably won't have to look that hard to find them (or just consult Zagat or one of the other restaurant guides) ( Oh I just read here there is a place called Blaue Gans that is supposed to be upscale, I will try to run a post on that too!)

Great dive bar in Tribeca. This long, narrow bar serves up some great beers, and does it with a big smile across it's face. The bartenders are very attentive and super friendly. The jukebox is always slinging out great tunes from classic rock to modern pop favorites. However, the music is never at that deafening level where you can't hold a conversation.

There is always a good vibe in this place.

Keep in mind it is cash only, but pretty sure there is an ATM in the front of the bar if needed.

i like the look of this place better from the outside than from the inside.  It has a good selection of beer and an attractive crowd.  I was there on a weekend afternoon to watch a little sports.

While I was trying to decide whether it was trying to create a "dive" atmosphere or whether it just happened to do that on its own, I fell back to the "tavern" in its name and decided that it is trying to be a dive.

That explains the lack of wiping up beer slop on the bar and empty glasses hanging around.  I doubt the keg lines are cleaned regularly.  If I go back it will be to drink only - not to order food.

The TV does not have good picture quality and the sound has the same quality.

Very crowded dive bar. I came with a large group of friends to catch the end of a basketball game. Bartenders were not very friendly -- one said she couldn't take our food orders at the bar (?).

We managed to find seating in the front and ordered an array of appetizers. I suppose we were all very hungry so everything tasted great, but in actuality, it was typical bar food.

Probably would only come again if in the area and/or friends wanted to meet up here.

Great lunch special which includes a beer and an entree for $10-- ordered the wedge salad which was pretty good, but heavy on the dressing. Overall, definitely worthwhile to come back.

I went with a few girlfriends around 8 pm on a Friday and found it to be mostly an older, relaxed, after-work crowd. The back bar was crowded but not rowdy, and there was a spacious wooden table available in view of the pool table. The sweet potato fries were too small to retain much sweet potato flavor and the nacho sticks tasted a bit fake-cheesy, but the beer was good and we enjoyed the chill atmosphere.

I like spontaneity and wandering around the streets of Lower Manhattan with no particular aim in mind. And for once, I was with a companion who didn't slyly pull out his phone and look up on Yelp for a place to have a beer. In a way, it was refreshing. I was going on an adventure and this time, I left Yelp at home.

I pass by this place frequently and have always been curious about it, but I never ventured in.  But tonight, we were on a mission to get a round of beers, and so when my partner in crime (PIC) mentioned this place, I knew it was going to be a good night.

The place is a no-frills kind of bar. But, they do have a vast selection of beers on tap. That's a good sign. They also had my favorite beer, "Magic Hat #9." So naturally, I had one of those.  He ordered a vodka and cranberry. I didn't realize he was going for something stronger...

Of course, bars always have interesting people. And tonight was no different. Somehow, we get to talking about prostatitis. I guess it is not a usual conversation topic, so another guy at the bar butts in and starts to have a conversation with us. He starts to tell me which hospital he volunteers at and also about his dad getting spinal surgery and well...you know. I wasn't exactly interested in having a medical discussion. I was off-duty and really just wanted to chat with my PIC.

But before I knew it, my PIC was on his third drink. And of course, he couldn't finish it. And of course, like a good PIC, I help him finish it off. I did get a peek at the bill and for 1 beer and three vodka/cranberry, it came to about $40. Not too bad by Manhattan standards. And of course, he was a gentleman and paid.

The Tavern is spacious and is pretty long, so you can also sit in the back too. They have TVs (which isn't my thing), but if you're looking for a game, you'll definitely find one here. I think I also spied a jukebox. It isn't a bad choice for a round of beers.

I had a blast here with some friends. This place has a great beer selection, running the gamut of quality from bug light to delirium tremens. For 10 bucks you can get a burger and fries with a beer. No joke, the burger was the best one I've had since I moved to NYC in 2011. Actually, it was probably the best one I've had in way longer than that. The fries are amazing too. The bartender was cool and the ambiance is just really fun and relaxed. It's a bit of a pain that it's cash only but there's an atm so it isn't too bad.

I'm kind of surprised that this is being called a dive bar. I know dive bars when I see them and this ain't one. (PROTIP: If a bar has 10 dollar beers on tap then it isn't a dive.)  It's just what a tavern is supposed to be. Granted, it's close to fancy places like Blaue Gans and whatnot so I guess it seems divey in comparison.
