Today firefighters will line up in a guard of honour at the funeral to mark the incredible life of London's first post-war black firefighter Frank Bailey.
Frank Arthur Bailey came to London from Guyana in 1953 and as a political activist he joined West Indian Standing Conference.
He later attended a TUC conference and heard from a Fire Brigades Union (FBU) delegate that black people 'were not employed by the fire service'.

A boxing project launched by Lambeth firefighters is aiming to put gang crime on the ropes by getting young preople off the streets and into the gym. It offers young people a knock out blend of boxing lessons, fitness and firefighter skills and those taking part will have the chance to qualify as a personal trainer. The project hit the headlines this week when ITV news cameras visited the Brixton gym where we run the course. A firefighter’s first animal rescue was to an unwise owl stuck in a tree in a garden in Hayes, yesterday.
Hillingdon white watch were called to the garden on Normandy Drive by the RSPCA, who believe the owl is owned as it had leather straps around its feet.
Firefighter Noble used a short extension ladder to safely rescue the bird and it is currently being cared for by the RSPCA until in can be reunited with its owner.

Emma Hetherington Had a few funny animal rescue stories from the OH over the years. His favourite was a small cat being given O2 by one of his colleagues, it woke up, saw this great hulking FF and tried to eat his face before leaping over his shoulder and taking off. He got a couple of scratches and gave the rest of his watch the giggles for the remainder of the shift.

He renovates them in his own time making them more robust and equipped to deal with incidents in developing countries. Recently Mark sent six ambulances to Sierra Leone to help in their fight against Ebola and treat casualties. More information about his charity here http://www.globalaidvehicles.com/

To mark the 75th Anniversary of the biggest “Blitz” raid on the capital – The Second Great Fire of London - wartime fire engines were mobilised from Dowgate Fire Station to 'save' St Paul's cathedral. In our 150th year it is even more important than ever to remember all those firefighters who have given their life to protect London from fire.

Peter Russell
Peter Russell They need honouring for service given, and remembered for all time. As those who have served and those still serving, deserve as the years pass and lives are at risk, Firemen are non-discriminatory although politicians treat them with disdain and scorn. Politicians should be held to account when disasters lead to lives being lost from cuts in the Service we honour.
