Disney Gave PewDiePie a Giant Pile of Money to Give to Other YouTubers

Disney Gave PewDiePie a Giant Pile of Money to Give to Other YouTubers
In a flurry of buzzwords, YouTube star PewDiePie and Disney’s Maker Studios announced a partnership that brings us Revelmode. What is Revelmode? Well, that’s a little less clear.
Revelmode is being called a “network.” Which is technically true in that the end result is a bunch of content creators working under a single brand name, “networked” like a bunch of computers. Multi-channel networks are basically the YouTube equivalent of going from indie filmmaker to movie studio contract. PewDiePie (whose IRL name is Felix Kjellberg) even says in the announcement video that joining one loses “hipster cred.” Not that anyone can be blamed for throwing their lot in with Disney money. And Disney security.
Revelmode isn’t just PewDiePie giving money and other resources to a bunch of other YouTubers, of course. Revelmode is going to be a network under the larger umbrella organization of Maker Studios. Maker, of course, is now owned by Disney. It’s a Russian nesting doll of interests, with the hope being that Disney can squeeze some money out of YouTubers.

Of course, we’re assuming from context that this is going to be a digital network of some kind. Everyone’s talking like we know exactly what this all means, when the actual words are super vague. “Revelmode is me and a bunch of really awesome YouTubers coming together as a group to do awesome things,” was PewDiePie’s opening description in his announcement video.
Including PewDiePie, Revelmode’s roster is nine-deep: CinnamonToastKenCutiePieMarziaDodgerEmmaBlackeryJackSepticEyeJellyKwebbelkop, and Markiplier. And you’ll get to see them all as cartoons in the very first Revelmode show.
It’s going to be fascinating to see if Disney’s investment actually pays off for them. Everyone’s trying desperately to figure out how to monetize internet videos on a more massive scale. And rolling up to established internet figures with bags of cash and offering to give them some of that money is a perfectly valid attempt. But that also brings us one step closer to Disney owning every bit of media we consume.

  • I’m officially old, because I have no idea why this guy’s videos are so popular.
    • Yup. Me too. Sometimes I miss adjusting the antenna, watching M*A*S*H, and getting up for a snack during commercials.
      • They’re all utterly moronic and pointless. I can’t even get through an entire video without shutting it off. As for the other YT names listed here, I’ve not even heard of them.
        • I’ll admit I’m extremely backwards when it comes to most things, I don’t tweet, I don’t use Facebook, I like to turn my phone off for periods of time. I do however enjoy some of the lets play youtubers. Reminds me of college, I’d watch my brother play Call of Duty and antagonize the crap out of people, it made me laugh. PewDiePie can be incredibly annoying but there are some other ones out there that don’t go for the overacting schtick and just talk gaming and stuff. It’s a TV substitute for me when I’m in the mood.
          • There’s a place for “utterly moronic and pointless”...but that place isn’t the #1 YouTube channel in the world making millions of dollars.
          • We live in a strange age. There is a comedian with racist puppets who made it big, and now this architect student has made gobs of money by making us laugh by over-reacting to video games.
I can’t even begin to imagine the next big thing in entertainment.
            Hat's off to Felix though.
          • “Revelmode is me and a bunch of really awesome YouTubers coming together as a group to do awesome things,”
I haven’t said this in a while, but I fucking hate youth culture. Fuck off with your awesome.
          • It sounds vague, but usually these types of networks on YouTube are an opportunity to produce collaborative content featuring multiple members from the network. I suppose the notion is that if it’s successful it will introduce viewers of one channel to other channels in the network, as well as simply producing quality content.
            • Personally, I just don’t know why anyone else cares if they’re making a business plan and trying to improve their own financial standings.
It’s great if you hate the people on this, but their business strategy isn’t abusive or necessarily wrong.
            • I just saw this as well over on Digg.com, but they got his name wrong.
PewDieDie - not once but over and over again.
