More than 10 years ago, when a ballot initiative in Maine threatened to cut the number of firefighters there by as much as 40 percent, Mullane helped union members organize a door-to-door campaign that soundly defeated the measure, said Ronnie Green, district vice president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Maine. And he helped the union pass legislation that created a presumption that firefighters who were diagnosed with certain cancers contracted them in the line of duty, Green said.
Mullane also helped create the Boston Firefighters Children's Fund, which donates to residents who have suffered losses in a fire, especially around Christmas.
