“It’s a juvenile red-tailed hawk, under a year old. It has some injuries, its toes are swollen and it has blood on its abdomen. We were very lucky to catch him. He made an attempt to jump off at the last second but he maneuvered the bucket perfectly. Without this equipment we never would have saved him.” FDNY Firefighter and Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator Robert Horvath describes today’s rescue of a red-tailed hawk on Canal St. in Manhattan. With assistance from Firefighter Greg DeBiase and members of Ladder 1 and Battalion 1, Firefighter Horvath was able to capture the injured animal, who had been sitting on the air conditioner of a third floor apartment for over 24 hours. “He just needs some TLC. We’re going to take good care of him.”

Today’s FDNY Throwback Thursday photo is from this day in 1976, at a 5th-alarm fire at Atlantic Ave and Clinton St in Brooklyn. While operating at this incident Firefighter Charles Sanchez from Ladder 131 made the supreme sacrifice. See more photos at http://ow.ly/WMc66

New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Our apologies, it was certainly not our intent to show disrespect or upset anyone. We share Throwback Thursday photos as a way to give our followers a glimpse into past incidents, and we typically don't share detailed information on these particular posts.

Joe Kaposi Very sad to hear about the loss of any firefighter. But my question is..regardless of how dedicated, why would you respond to a fire when you are off shift.? Micheal Benzi.
Today, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the graduation of 29 Emergency Medical Technicians at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn. Over the last 12 months, these new EMTs have already served as FDNY Emergency Medical Dispatchers, answering thousands of emergency medical calls and dispatching FDNY resources throughout New York City. Seven of today’s graduates also attended the FDNY High School for Fire and Life Safety in Brooklyn, which they graduated from in 2013. “Seven members from Ladder 20 died on the 35th floor of the North Tower on 9/11. In the days that followed, condolences from around the world arrived. Everyone was knocking on our door. Then one day two Sheriffs from Rochester, New York showed up with a Dalmatian puppy. Her name was Twenty, and she became our mascot and companion. She really helped to build the morale in the years following 9/11. I can’t say enough about what she did to help us. She went on all the runs, she’...

Danielle Simone Dolce My husband works at ladder 20 and was heartbroken today to learn that it was her time to go today. He took the long trek from Long Island into the city to be with his loyal friend one last time. May she rest easy and once again be the young and playful puppy she was as she crosses the rainbow bridge- well miss you 20!!

Safety should be your number one priority no matter how low the temperature dips. NEVER use your kitchen stove or gas range to warm your home. Improper use could cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to accumulate, resulting in severe illness and possible death. Only use appliances for their intended purposes. Remember, a working smoke/CO alarm is the single most valuable lifesaving device you can have in your home. New Yorkers can ‪#‎GetAlarmedNYC‬ and register for FREE smoke/CO alarms and installation by contacting NYC 311

•Be sure to keep your space heater at least 3 ft. from bedding, curtains and other materials.
•Avoid using electric space heaters in the bathroom or other areas where they may come in contact with water.
•Never use an extension cord with a space heater, and turn off/unplug the heater when you leave the room....
