Most of Capitol Hill's Bike Lane Smurf Turds Are No More
Seattle has seen a boom in bike lanes around town and SDOT has used many different tactics to make them stand out as well as protect cyclists. In Capitol Hill, their usage of 21 curvy blue bollards along Broadway has been almost-universally hated since being installed in 2014. Not only were the pieces often defective, falling over and making it harder to get around, but they also looked like giant Smurf turds. Apparently the complaints finally kickstarted something and CHS reports that Broadway has been de-turded without much fanfare or warning. A few bollards remain south of Pine but the rest are "gone for good." Expect to see white posts replace them between E Pine and E Howell streets.

Here's Some Very Seattle Ways To Celebrate David Bowie
David Bowie's musical career was epic and if it is all you know of him then you probably already think of him as a legend. But the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Famer was so much more than just a singer and songwriter. He was a multi-instrumentalist, a record producer, a painter an actor, just to name a few things. The icon passed away Sunday, just two days passed his 69th birthday. He leaves behind many fans around the world who want to celebrate his life and artistry and for those here in Seattle, there are more than a few ways to do that.
Visit The Science Fiction & Fantasy Hall of Fame at EMP
Although his membership in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is slightly more well-know, Bowie is also an inductee into the Science Fiction & Fantasy Hall of Fame at EMP. Inducted in 2013, Bowie gained membership due to "significant aspects of his work have promoted science fiction and fantasy to the mainstream." His concept albums and film work often blended fantasy with reality and touched on bigger issues through science fiction. Go pay homage to his face on the wall of inductees and then peruse EMP for more artifacts from his many careers. According to their Facebook page, they are playing Bowie's music and "working on a few other things for this week."

$18M Vashon Island Estate Comes With Its Own Lighthouse
If you've got a waterfront house and estate so grand that it's a good idea to build a lighthouse just to make sure no one crashes into it, you've probably got a little bit of money. You've got personal lighthouse money. Such is the case with the 5-BR, 4-bath, 9,969 residence at 8415 SW Soper Road on Vashon Island that just listed for a whopping $18 million. Owned by Trojan Lithograph Corporation & Corrugated Synergies International Chairman Hans Koch and wife Cynthia, the 1999-built residence rests on almost 24 acres of land with over 1,000 feet of beachfront. Hence the lighthouse. It'd be easy to build a place like this and make it into a mausoleum but the use of local stone, river rock and timber keep the place grounded...to a point. There's only so much grounding you can do when you've also got a 12-seat movie theater, walk-in wine cellar and a gorgeous circular library built in to your personal lighthouse. Of course there's a guesthouse too because you can't have a property this big and not have a guesthouse, you know?
$2.4M Woodinville Estate Has Room For Your (Secret) Hobbies
It is refreshing to find an upscale house that did more than just make the formal spaces more formal and more spacious. This 4 bedroom, 5 bath house has plenty of space considering its 6,630 square feet, and they played with it. They're asking $2,395,000, which includes the "standard luxury" items like a gorgeous entry, an expansive kitchen, and a master bath with enough nozzles and jets to clean every pore. The biggest and easiest to see fun part is the swimming pool that comes with its own house. There's also a volleyball court out there, too. Inside, there's the expected home theater, a billiards room, and that other great entertainment that's home to Woodinville - a wine cellar. Then, even if you poke around you may not find the secret door that leads to a hobby room that includes a stage and room for, well, "secret hobbies," possibly. Between the inside and the outside is a large, protected patio that has its own fireplace, dining area, and room for the hot tub. Maybe the greatest luxury isn't in the crystal, but in the choices available.

Elite Street: 10 Impressive Homes of World Leaders
Clockwise from top left: Rashtrapati Bhavan in India, Palácio da Alvorada in Brazil, Prague Castle in the Czech Republic, and cin South Korea
While the race for the White House may seem like it's already lasted an entire four-year term, the real battle traditionally begins this month, as hopefuls start fighting in earnest for votes and delegates in Iowa and New Hampshire. There are plenty of reasons politicians spend years battling for the presidency; the opportunity to live in the Neoclassical masterpiece at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, who won a prize to envision a then-new presidential residence in 1792, is just one. Arguably the most recognizable buildings in the country, the home and office of the President of the United States, like other such residences across the globe, represents architectural achievement and symbolizes national pride. Beyond some of the more well-known seats of power, such as the Kremlin or 10 Downing Street, these select homes of some of the world's most powerful men and women showcase both historic and modern architecture, and help tell the story of their particular countries and rulers.

Own a Fred Anhalt Bungalow in Laurelhurst For $750K
Usually when you're talking about historically-significant builder and contractor Fred Anhalt, you're talking about his iconic apartment buildings with their turrets, stained-glass windows and spiral staircases. But the honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and his company also built many bungalow-style houses around Seattle and one of them just hit the market. Built in 1938 for Mr. & Mrs. Harold Heathman, the 2-BR home at 3532 45th Ave NE in Laurelhurst just listed for $750K. Tucked behind the landscaping and trees, the 1,540 square-foot residence has some classic features, including a stained-glass window, built-ins, old fireplace and skylights. It will need some updating, but the right kind can keep the appeal of the original home while bringing it into modern living. Out back, the detached garage harkens back to Seattle's old ways while the grounds is primed for building a garden. Anhalt stopped building homes in 1942 so this is your chance to get one of the final ones the Seattle building icon created.
Here's a Tiny $385K Bungalow Between the Bridges in Frelard
If for no other reason, once in your life live in a bungalow just to be able to say the word more often. Bungalow. One of the oddest housing names after yurt. Cute, though. This 1 bedroom, 1 bath house that's 600 square feet inside probably was built by pragmatists, not designed by high-paid architects; and after 110 years of owners it continues to give bungalow a good name. They're asking $385,000 for it and the 3,000 square foot lot it sits on. Besides the classic hardwood floors, a wainscot and tile bath, peaked roof, stylish and minimalist roof over the front door; the property also has location. It has good access to the Burke-Gilman Trail, Leary Way, the Ballard and Fremont bridges, and Ballard and Fremont. Or, stay home and enjoy a design and style that's survived more than a century - then get more modern and hangout in the hot tub out back. Historic is nice, but modern indulgences are sweet.

Five Properties Worth Buying Along Metro Bus Route 148
Seattle has buses. (Really, they're throughout King County, and reach into the neighboring counties, too.) Use them! In which case you might as well find a place to live along a line. One line at a time. Here's the next one, selected at random for the fun of it.
Why live in Fairwood? Maybe because the most expensive house there is less than the median price for Seattle homes. Take Route 148 down to Renton for ride a bit over a half hour; and if you have to, hop on Route 101 to get you into Seattle less than an hour later. A few hundred thousand dollars here, an extra hour or two there, make your choices.
↑ So, here's a new idea. They suggest this 4 bedroom, 3 bath, 2,530 square foot as a Mother-In-Law house. Why put the mother-in-law in an MIL when she can get her own house for $388,000? With that many rooms, there's enough room for one spouse's mother-in-law, the other spouse's mother-in-law, and the fathers, too (assuming only one mother and father per spouse, but modern American families are messy so maybe someone will have to share a room.) If there's any friction, even the cars can be separated; though it might be a struggle to see who gets the garage and who gets the carport (and whether the garage is still a garage, or has become storage or yet another room.) Of course, a family might move in and that's fine. No in-laws required.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Lists Clyde Hill Home For $3.5M
Try not to read too much into this, Microsoft investors, but CEO Satya Nadella has just listed his Clyde Hill 4-BR for $3.488M. Nadella and wife Anupama purchased the 1968-home in 2000 for $1.38M when he was working his way up through the ranks. The 4,050 square-foot contemporary-style home keeps things wide open with vaulted ceilings that create an open living atmosphere downstairs. Not to mention it helps make for great views downstairs and upstairs from the balcony out of the wall-to-floor windows. Up there there's also room for a makeshift office or library. Among the four bedrooms is the master suite, complete with a rain shower. French doors take you outside where you can appreciate the manicured lawn and entertainment areas. Considering he took over as CEO in 2014 and earned a commensurate pay raise, it looks like he's about to do some serious upgrading on the home front.
