The job of a firefighter is one of the toughest jobs on the planet... between the things we are exposed to and all the other things trying to actively kill us, at one point or another it makes all of us wonder "Is this job worth it?"

!['It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that members of the Fremont County Fire Protection District in Wyoming are mourning the deep loss of much loved and respected Deputy Chief Clarence “Speed” Hartbank.
The 45-year member of the department passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 in the afternoon after finally succumbing to the injuries he sustained when was commanding a September 10, 2015 grass fire.
While he was surveying damage to a ground-level bunker, he fell through a hidden / concealed area / hole and into the fire.
Deputy Chief Dan Oakley and Sheriff’s Deputy Donovan Detimore saw the incident occur and bravely went in and entered the bunker.
Fortunately they were able to pull Chief Hartbank out.
Chief Hartbank was flown to Swedish Medical Burn Center with second degree burns to 38% of his body.
He also suffered broken ribs and a lung injury.
Oakley and Detimore were taken to Riverton Hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
Despite many hopes and prayers, Speed passed away.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are now with the many friends and family left behind mourning his loss.
Rest in Peace Brother
We have the watch from here
Until we all meet again on the “Top Floor”

!['Question #1: Why are bagpipes a part of funerals, especially firefighter and police funerals?
The history of funeral bagpipes is a fairly simple (though very sad) one. In traditional Celtic cultures, including both the Irish and Scottish cultures, bagpipes were an important part of a traditional funeral. After the Great Potato Famine of the mid-1840s, Irish immigrants came to the United States in huge numbers.
Due primarily to racism and xenophobia, Irish people were often allowed to apply for only the most dangerous and difficult jobs, including the jobs of firefighter and police officer.
Work-related deaths for firemen and cops were not uncommon, and when one or more of these deaths would occur, the Irish community would hold a traditional Irish funeral, including the mournful bagpipes. Over the years, this tradition spread to firefighters and police officers who were not of Irish descent.
Question #2: So if it's an Irish tradition, why are the Scottish bagpipes used?
In short, it's because the Scottish highland bagpipes are significantly louder than the traditional Irish uillean pipes.
Though it's likely that either or both types of pipes were used at funerals in the 1800s, the Scottish highland pipes are now almost universally used.
Question #3: Where do they find bagpipers to play at firefighter and police officer's funerals?
Fire and police departments in most major cities have a special brigade, usually as a division of an Irish fraternal group called The Emerald Society, who learn to play bagpipes and drums for the very purpose of honoring their fallen comrades.
In some places, civilians may be members of the pipe and drum band, but generally, the members are active or retired firefighters and police officers.

!['I would like you to meet Longwood Fire Company, PA Honorary Firefighter 14 year-old Gianna Winter.
Gianna was born pre-mature and one of her most significant disabilities is Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy has made it hard for her to even walk and talk, but through hard work and therapy gradually over the years her abilities improved.
She even had to wear special leg braces called MAFOs from kindergarten to around fifth grade because her legs were too tight and her ankles would hit each other and she would sometimes fall.
Gianna has also had learning issues and was placed in a special ed classrooms in elementary school.
But Gianna is a FIGHTER and has never let her disabilities define her or stop her from accomplishing what she wants to.
A couple of years ago Gianna was in and out of the hospital a lot and needed some ambulance rides from the Longwood Fire Company.
Ever since then they have stuck like glue.
Longwood Fire Co loved her so much they got Gianna her own set of turn outs and made her an Honorary Firefighter.
Gianna LOVES the Fire Service and particularly loves the TV show "Chicago Fire". Her dream is to one day visit the set and meet the producers and actors.
She even recently created a facebook page…

!['I must of been born to be a firefighter,
because I'm always drawn to flame
Put a spark in my eye
a burn in my touch,
I'll fight it 'til I die.
I know it's not good for me
it darkens my soul
strengthens my mind
eliminates emotions-
leaves me cold
but I'm an addict
who can't say no
I need the flames, the fire
the raw burning desire
I must of been born to be a firefighter
I've never been much good at the boring
I could never have worked at a desk
I like a job that is more like a life test
You give me fire…
I'll fight 'til I expire
