NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The Nashville Fire Department put on a demonstration Thursday to show the potential fire hazards of Christmas decorations.
A dried-out Christmas tree can go up in flames in seconds.
Firefighters recommend making sure to keep your Christmas tree watered every day. Also, look for frayed wires on lights and don't overload power outlets with lights. Turn off your lights when you go to bed or leave the house.
The type of lights also matter.
"When you put lights on your tree, make sure they're rated by some type of laboratory, like a UL," Fire Marshal Al Thomas said. "There will be a label on the lights themselves that say it has been tested by UL."
Most importantly, firefighters said to make sure you have a working smoke alarm in your home.
In Thursday's demonstration, the smoke alarm went off within about 10 seconds of the start of the fire.
