TWO SAN FRAN FFs SHOCKED BY SOLAR PANELS AT FIRE

Thursday, December 24, 2015    Two firefighters were shocked, apparently by a rooftop solar panel, while trying to extinguish a one-alarm fire at a home in San Francisco’s Bayview District Wednesday afternoon, a fire department spokeswoman said.

SIX OHIO FFs INJURED IN CRASH

Thursday, December 24, 2015   Six firefighters were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the fire truck they were riding in crashed in Hubbard Township early Wednesday morning.The Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says the Eagle Joint Fire District firefighters were responding to a call just after 1 a.m. when the truck went off westbound Chestnut Ridge Road just west of Wick Campbell Road, hitting a culvert, ditch, mailbox and a tree. The truck was not running its lights or siren.

The vehicle was being driven by Thomas Gregory, 60, of Hubbard. He was charged with failure to maintain reasonable control.

Life Fleet ambulances and the Brookfield Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. The firefighters were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt said the firefighters were lucky.

The fire truck, however, was not so lucky.

Thursday, December 24, 2015   We regret to pass on to you that 66 year old Fire Captain Willie Ratliff of the Clarksdale (Mississippi) Fire Department died in quarters Monday, 12-21-2015. 

We pointed out to read about this man who was clearly a Firefighter who loved the job, who NEVER missed a day at work..an old school Fire Captain who passed away in his firehouse bed. They had his retirement party just last week....

Please READ about this cool guy-who I wish I could have met ...and just sat and listened to...just imagine the stories. Rest In Peace, Captain Ratliff.

To his last day on the Clarksdale Fire Department Captain Willie Ratliff could still fight fire with the young guys. That's what his fellow firefighters said about him. It's what the community of Clarksdale knew about him.

CA BATTALION CHIEF INVOLVED IN CRASH 

Thursday, December 24, 2015    A fire battalion chief suffered minor injuries when his pickup was broadsided by another pickup as the chief made his way to an emergency in Winchester on Wednesday, Dec. 23, authorities said.The Cal Fire battalion chief, a 62-year-old Menifee man, was driving east on Scott Road in his red and white F250 Cal Fire pickup, California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig said.

Lassig said the firefighter had his lights and sirens on and was making his way against a red light through Scott Road's intersection with Winchester Road. A dump truck stopped on Winchester to let the firefighter pass.

Lassig said the driver of a 2003 Toyota Tundra, a 52-year-old Winchester man, was driving the Tundra 45 mph to 55 mph when he came upon the stopped dump truck.

He went around the dump truck by switching to another lane and proceeded through the intersection on a green light. That's when he struck the battalion chief's F250, pushing it through the intersection a... [ more ]
     

 

LODD UPDATE: Former Rescue Squad Captain Indicted In Coworker's Line of Duty Death By Drowning

Wednesday, December 23, 2015   The former captain of the Etowah County Rescue Squad has been indicted in the death of a squad member who drowned during an April rescue on Big Wills Creek.Michael Ervin Bettis, 49, of Gadsden is charged with one count of criminally negligent homicide, which is a Class A misdemeanor, Etowah County Sheriff Tod Entrekin announced this afternoon. Bettis was booked into the county jail with bond set at $2,500.

The incident happened April 25 when a 25-year-old man was out kayaking with family members about in Big Wills Creek near Brooke Avenue and was swept into the water. The man went missing near an old low head dam that was once used to pump water into the Gulf States steel mill nearby.

Members of Gadsden Fire and the Etowah County Rescue Squad began a search, and employed two rescue boats. One of the boats got too close to the dam and was swept over the side. The second boat soon followed and nine Rescue Squad workers were cast into the creek.

NEW HAVEN FF SUFFERS BACK INJURY AT FIRE 

Tuesday, December 22, 2015   A firefighter was injured while battling a two-alarm blaze at a Goffe Terrace house Monday night.The firefighter hurt his back during the fire and was transported to the hospital.

The fire at 144 Goffe Terrace was reported at 6:53 p.m., Chief Allyn Wright said, and started on the third floor towards the rear of the home. No one was inside at the time of the fire.

The fire was contained to the one house and surrounding homes were evacuated. The house sustained heavy damage to the roof and third floor.

Neighbors lined the street behind yellow caution tape as over a dozen firefighters remained on scene. The gas company arrived around 8 p.m. to turn off power to the house.
     

 

Veteran Firefighter Dies In Fire Department Vehicle Crash-North Carolina 

Tuesday, December 22, 2015   We regret to pass on to you the delayed news that Firefighter Sidney "Sid" Winer, 92 years old, of the No. 7 Township Fire Rescue (New Bern, North Carolina) died in the Line of Duty following an on duty crash. Firefighter Winer was involved in that crash on October 20th, 2015, while riding in department's Ford F150 while returning from picking up equipment.  Another vehicle pulled out directly in front of the department's truck. Firefighter Winer sustained serious fractures to both feet as a result of the crash which totaled the department's truck.  As a result of the injuries he sustained, Firefighter Winer's right leg was amputated just below the knee on December 3rd, 2015.  Firefighter Winer was in the rehabilitation center at Carolina East Medical Center when he succumbed to his injuries on December, 15th. Services were held last weekend.
Our condolences to all those affected. RIP.

CLOSE CALL IN CHINA - FIREFIGHTER ON FIRE

Tuesday, December 22, 2015   A video of a firefighter jumping out of the window of a burning second-floor apartment in Jianli county, Hubei Province, has gone viral on Chinese social media. In the video, the firefighter is seen standing by the window attempting to arrange a line that he could grab to slide down, as the flames continue to grow intense. However, as his clothes caught fire, he was left with little option but to jump off the window holding on to the fire hose. Fortunately, he survived the incident, only suffering minor injuries to his hands.
     

 

FIREFIGHTER DIES AT MUSEUM FIRE IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, S.A. 

Tuesday, December 22, 2015   A Firefighter in São Paulo (Brazil, South America) died in the Line of Duty. A multi alarm fire at the Portuguese Language Museum, located in a 19th century building resulted in the Firefighter going down, with one report indicating he suffered burns. Despite lifesaving attempts he died in the Line of Duty. As you will see in the below links, there we very heavy fire conditions.
The fallen Firefighter was identified as Ronaldo Pereira da Cruz, a Firefighter who actually worked at the museum as a part of their brigade. More than 100 Firefighters operated at the museum fire, which was closed at the time of the fire.

FDNY ENGINE CRASH IN BROOKLYN 

Tuesday, December 22, 2015   Five people were injured, including a 9-year-old girl, when a fire engine collided with an SUV in Brooklyn, flipping the car Sunday afternoon, police said.

The FDNY’s Engine 248 was on its way to a fire when it collided with a grey Nissan Xterra at New York and Snyder Aves. in East Flatbush around 12:30 p.m., authorities said.

The SUV was sent rolling through the intersection before it came to a stop near on its passenger side.

The four women inside the Nissan were taken to Kings County Hospital, officials said. Two of them were listed in serious condition while the other two suffered minor injuries.

A firefighter also suffered minor injuries from the collision, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The engine had been called to respond to a space-heater fire at a home on E. 45th Street, near Clarendon Road, but it wasn’t immediately clear if it was en route to the blaze when it crashed, an FDNY spokesman said.

Monday, December 21, 2015   Detroit Firefighters escaped a close call recently battling a dwelling fire. Companies were working the fire when it sounds like a Firefighter ran out of air in the basement. Make sure you have your volume up on this video when you are watching it.
