It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that FF/Paramedic Dan Capuano of Chicago Fire - Tower Ladder 34 died in the line of duty.
In the early morning hours on December 14th, 2015 Chicago’s Bravest were called out for service once again and when firefighters arrived at the three-story building / vacant warehouse, there was heavy smoke through the second floor.
Chicago Firefighters entered and began searching for the source of the fire.

Signs of PTSD
PTSD is very real, and a lot of firefighters suffer from it but have never been clinically diagnosed.
It is our job as fellow firefighters, officers and chiefs to look for the signs of PTSD and help sufferers get the help they need.

Chicago Firefighters entered and began searching for the source of the fire.
During the search some of the Firefighters noticed holes in the floor and an emergency alert was issued for firefighters to use caution. However, sadly and tragically FF Capuano fell through an open elevator shaft from the second floor all the way down to the basement.
“It looks like the firefighter had just walked into the elevator shaft as he was searching, couldn’t see and fell.” Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said.
Crews quickly located Capuano, performed CPR and put him in an ambulance to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:25 a.m.
Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the department, leaves behind a wife and three children. FF Capuano also worked as a firefighter in Evergreen Park, IL.
Please keep FF Capuano’s family, friends and Chicago Fire in your hearts, thoughts and prayers.
Rest in Peace Brother.
We have the watch.
Until we all meet again on the “Top Floor”

Many people will now come forward and say they were working for us, but there truly were only a few people that made this victory possible:
Special thank you to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, former host of “The Daily Show” Jon Stewart, to my friend John Feal from the @[895370460496667:274:FealGood Foundation Outreach And Education Program], and most especially to all of the 9/11 first responders who came to Washington, to walk the legislative halls in an “all-in” effort to get our Congress to do the right thing.
It’s shameful and embarrassing and shouldn't have taken this long and been this hard to make sure our heroes, the 9/11 first responders will receive the medical care they desperately need and deserve to heal and improve whatever life they have left.
In the picture, the champions who would settle for nothing short of victory: John Feal, Michael Connor, Jon Stewart, Ray Pfeifer, Richard Palmer, Kenny Specht and Keith Delmar in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.

!['"My Brother Has Fallen"
My Brother has fallen; no I don't know his name,
Have not the same parents still family all the same.
He lives in this town, I live in another,
It doesn't really matter cause this man is my Brother.
My Brother I call him yet I've never seen his face
I have brothers and sisters all over the place.
You see I am a Firefighter and our families are one,
A tradition for years past from father to son.
Around the world, a Brotherhood of unity,
A closeness, a bond, most people don't see.
I'll watch his back; She'll watch mine,
"You go, I go" time after time.
His family's my family, Her family theirs,
We're part of one family where everyone cares.
I'll look after your kids, please look in on my wife,
Should that day finally come when I laid down my life.
We dedicate our lives helping our fellow man,
Living day after day doing all that we can.
Where ever we're needed whether nighttime or day, To save the life of another we'll step in harm’s way.
My Brother has fallen doing what he loved best,
And among the Honored, he now stands with the rest. For a mile in dress uniform here everyone stands, For my Brother has fallen God... into your hands.

"Just before I created this piece I checked how many firefighters had died in the line of duty in the United States and Canada this year.
I'm sad to say it's 81, 78 in USA and 3 in Canada.
It's hard to get an accurate number, I decided on 81 after looking at several sights and I went with the most common numbers.
Please comment if these figures are not accurate.
This one is for the 81 Fallen and their families who will be spending the holiday season for the first time without them.
Stay safe brothers and sisters.

!['It is with much sadness and regret to inform you that a Fresno, CA based – “SkyLife” medical / rescue helicopter crashed Thursday, December 10th, 2015... killing all four people on board.
The helicopter crew worked for SkyLife, a medical transport service jointly owned by American Ambulance and Rogers Helicopters.
The company's staff of about 600 people were celebrating at their annual Christmas party last night when they got the news.
The SkyLife helicopter was traveling from Porterville to San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield — a 10-minute flight — a search was started at 7:37 p.m. after there was no contact with the aircraft and with dispatch for over 30 minutes.
Bad weather and rain hampered the efforts of searchers who about an hour after the search started found a crash site / debris field.
Sadly and tragically, there were no survivors.
Three of the four victims in the crash are Pilot Thomas Hampl, Nurse Marco Lopez, and Paramedic Kyle Juarez.
The fourth fatality is the patient whose name is still currently being withheld.
May these Brothers and the soul they were attempting to save rest in eternal peace.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of our fallen.
“Now, you may fly forever”

!['* Special Update regarding Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern:
It has been several months since our hero FFD Captain Pete Dern left the hospital / burn unit under his own power. Since then many fans have sent in frequent message requests for updates.
I have kept Pete and his family’s best interest and need for privacy a priority by only sharing general information about his condition and healing, but recently I got special permission from his daughter McKenzie to give everyone a photo and more specific update.
Last October Pete was back in the hospital for his colostomy reversal surgery. It went very well and he was VERY relieved to have that done. It dramatically improved his spirit, mobility and independence.
Pete still goes back to the outpatient burn clinic twice a week for a dressing change.
His scalp is being the most difficult and not healing / skin grafts taking as well as they should.
However his healing has been nothing short of amazing, from where he was then … to now, and he is practically almost all healed.
On November 5th, 2015 the firefighters who risked everything to save Pete's life got the wonderful recognition they deserve during the Fresno State Football game. Pete and his family were there in attendance.
Pete was in the hospital for over 5 months and the remarkable staff at Fresno Regional Burn Center was also there to be recognized for their contribution to Pete’s healing and rehabilitation.
The Dern’s frequently express that they have so much to be thankful for.
They are blessed to have love and support from around the world over, a caring local community, wonderful family, friends and neighbors and an incredible fire family.
Recently Pete was back at the hospital for another try at grafting his scalp.
Please keep the prayers coming... and Merry Christmas.

!['* 1 year Anniversary of our Fallen Little Brother Aiden
Aiden Riebel was six-years-old and already diagnosed with stage 4 Leukemia when he was sworn in as an honorary fireman, at the Washington Township Fire Department, New Jersey Nov. 21, 2013.
Originally diagnosed with cancer when he was 1, as his condition began to worsen; a campaign began to get his name on the roster of as many fire departments around the world as we could.
This 7-year-old inspired countless thousands and was named as an honorary firefighter in many fire departments around the world.
His name was put on shift boards, helmets and jackets, as well as helmets and vehicles from New York City to Kodiak, Alaska.
Aiden also received packages from fire departments in Australia and was even on the shift list at the Baan fire station in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Aiden was only with us for a short seven years, but he taught us so much.
He taught us that tomorrow is never guaranteed, and to love life and those in it, with all you have.
He has taught us that you always fight for what you want in life, no matter what anyone else says.
Aiden lived just a little more than a year after being sworn in.
Rest in Peace Little Brother
You earned your angel wings here on earth
Until we all meet again on the “Top Floor”

!['Firefighters are good at a lot of things. We are even great at some of them.
But one of the best things we do, is talk.
Shoot the shit. Flap our gums. We do it all day long. Except during nap time. Well some of us even talk during nap time.
(Yeah, we take naps. Did you expect us to stay up for 24 hours straight and still function during a fire fight?)
I'm pretty sure if you walk into any firehouse at this particular moment, you'll overhear one of these conversations, and it'll always be the same guys sparking them up…

2) Complaining About Union Stuff
3) Shit Talking
4) Politics
