Sewer fumes shut down Brooklyn school, sicken 21 students and staff: FDNY
BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn — Classes are cancelled for the rest of the day at a private school in Brooklyn after nearly two dozen students and staff became sick from fumes, fire officials said.
A stench was making people feel ill at Holy Angels Catholic Academy on 74th Street in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, according to FDNY. Crews were called to the scene about 10 a.m. to determine the source of the sickening smell.
FDNY found the odor was coming from a nearby sewer line, which has since been fixed to no longer emit the fumes, a department spokesperson said.
Twenty-one people, a mix of students and staff, were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, FDNY said.
School had been in session Monday but was cancelled after the group became ill.
