"MAYDAY-MAYDAY-MAYDAY" IT'S TRULY A "DEAD LINE" WEEK FOR EVERY AMERICAN FIREFIGHTER

Monday, December 7, 2015   This week is a very critical week and your help is needed...so out of respect for your time I will keep this really short and sweet with a "begging" overtone.

While it's sad that there has to be a "begging" overtone-there is no choice. This week is the final week that congress will meet in 2015. It is expected that congress will make a decision on supporting and funding (or not supporting and funding) the "Zadroga" act.

In order to pass before the end of the year, it must be voted on as part of the omnibus spending bill or be attached to a tax-extending bill.

Please call your congress member or senator and urge their support to fully fund and support HR 1786 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/1786).

OFFENSIVE? DEFENSIVE? SIT ON THE FENCE-IVE? NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Monday, December 7, 2015   First of all-relax-this piece is NOT about offensive, defensive or sit on the fence-ive firefighting.

This is about FIRE APPARATUS as well as about your BUNKER GEAR & RELATED PPE and the fact that new research supports significant changes are needed to fire apparatus and PPE to help us survive on the job.

Over the last several years, researchers at the NIOSH have collected body measurements from firefighters across the U.S. This was done in an effort to assess how well fire apparatus and personal protective equipment (PPE) accommodate today’s firefighters, who have different body sizes than the general population. The data NIOSH collected show that design changes to fire apparatus and PPE can aid in improving firefighter safety.

For example, NIOSH researchers found:
·         Seat belts are too short to allow firefighters to buckle up in turnout gear
·   &n... [ more ]

MEDIA MIS-INFORMED BEFORE ALL FACTS ARE AVAILABLE ? RE: DOUBLE FIREFIGHTER LODDs IN KANSAS CITY

Monday, December 7, 2015   Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi responded Sunday night to an article published by The Kansas City Star. The article, headlined "Firefighters killed in alley shouldn’t have been there," touches on the Oct. 12 fatal fire that killed two Kansas City Fire Department firefighters.
Firefighters John Mesh, 39, and Larry Leggio, 43, were killed during a two-alarm fire response on Independence Boulevard.
The Star reported a collapse zone was ordered minutes before the collapse happened. The collapse killed the two firefighters.
Berardi doesn't disagree something went wrong that night.
However, he also expressed criticism about the article since an investigation has not been completed yet. He also said the article placed blame on the victim.
"It's obvious that something went wrong," Berardi said. "Two people died, two people got seriously injured. So for me to stand up here and say nothing went wrong...that would be wrong also. But to put blame on John and L... [ more ]

Alpha urged drivers to use caution on the roads. "Slow down in fog," Alpha said on Twitter. "Someone just crashed into Engine 514 ... There are injuries."

It is unclear if Alpha referred to possible injuries from the accident it responded to or the accident it was involved in.

The roads, according to Alpha, were icy, making driving more difficult with impaired vision due to fog.

Traffic was disrupted for about two hours around the accident, it was cleared at about 10:10 a.m., according to 511P... [ more ]
