Nuthouse Hardware

Nuthouse is down just West of Kips Bay proper and is in my personal experience a very good store.

However, I have found what I wanted at other hardware stores as well, and in one case the local TrueValue store had exactly what I wanted whereas Nuthouse did not..

Nuthouse is open 24/7 , which for many people is a big plus

Well, here are Yelpers' remarks

Mixed reviews --some people really love this place, others accuse them of price gouging etc.

This place is incredible-open 24 hrs with helpful staff and everything you want in a hardware store!

What a blessing to pickup what I need for a rush job wt 3am if I have to!

I am a toolhead - admitted - and this store satisfies my craving!

Of all the hardware stores in Manhattan, we are very fortunate that this one happens to cater to us 24/7.

The fellow behind the counter had patience, a good wit, a knowledge of the merchandise and went above and beyond to search out the random screws and wooden dowel we needed to put our Ikea furniture back into commission.

Nuthouse Hardware, we owe ya' one.

I was looking for a very specific paint and after calling around to several hardware and paint stores, a gent from the Sherwin Williams on 21st referred me to Nuthouse.

I called ahead since it's a trek from where i am in Brooklyn to see if they had what i was looking for. The man who answered the phone was pleasant and helpful and was able to tell me that yes they carried that specific brand and asked what colours i wanted so he could make sure they had them in stock so i didn't waste a trip. After less than 2 minutes on hold, he informed me they had both colours in stock. I thanked him and hung up.

I hopped on the subway a little while later. Once at the store, it only took a few minutes for one of the staff members to help me locate my paint. There was no wait to check out and i was on my way in no time.

I will gladly come into Manhattan to give these guys my business in the future.

1 week ago I purchased a lightbulb from Nuthouse.
I take the bulb home, put it in the receptacle & learn that the thread of the bulb was warped.  The bulb wouldn't screw all the way in & wouldn't turn.

I returned to the Nuthouse to exchange for another bulb & was VERY RUDELY told, the thread is NOT warped & they do not exchange bulbs.  I had about a 10 minute exchange with a VERY rude cash rep explaining that they should try to screw in the bulb, I just want to exchange etc... NOTHING.

I have never had such a poor customer service experience in my life.  Looks like i'll be hitting home depot from now on.

I can't recommend for any reason.

This place has everything you need with an extremely knowledgeable staff. I had to go in to get a repair kit for an inflatable mattress (don't ask) and the employee at the door knew exactly which aisle to send me to.  I was in and out in less than 5 minutes.

If you need some basic hardware supplies this is your spot!

    Reasons to go here:
    1. You live close by or its late at night and you really need something and everywhere else is closed.
    2. You need some keys made

**if it's for any other reason, don't even bother.

    why??
    1. the people working there esp the dude with the BEARD&PONYTAIL could care less if you bought something. You are wasting their time for going and asking them questions. I mean.. I don't blame the guy- he lives in nyc and he's probably never had a date in his life. Hey dude, you just work in the hardware store and it's not even yours. The people in home depot know just as much as you do.

    2. The prices of things is just so freaking weird. They have a cc minimum..I think its 10 bucks. So when I bought some drano for 4.69, I had to pay 5.11 after tax. I couldn't use my cc, so I gave them 6 bucks bc I don't like to carry coins. What did I get back? a whole bunch of coins.

would I go back?  well I leave nyc in may so hell no.

Apparently Home Depot doesn't cut wood at their Manhattan stores, and they referred me here, and I'm glad they did! The salesguy helping me was so nice, walking me through what I needed (which glue, length of nails, etc.) and cutting the wood I needed to my specifications. The 24/7 nature of the store is also a nice bonus since the few other lumber yards I yelped seemed to close early.

This store isn't entirely devoid of qualities. It has a good selection, and it's opened 24 hours. But it's clearly overpriced, and the staff is rude enough to make me want to write a review. With that in mind, if you're already online looking for a good hardware store, save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere.

And to keep my yelp karma in balance I'm going to write a good review somewhere else.

Others have pointed out the convenience of this store for neighborhood residents. If not for that reason and their selection, I would never step foot in this store. The staff is a slow-moving inattentive circus. They defer to each other whenever possible and provide lackadaisical answers to most questions. In other cases, they simply have no idea what you're talking about -- an odd occurrence in a hardware store of all places. Asked for the location of a stud-finder today and was sent to no less than 5 employees before one lazily decided to walk me to their 4th floor.

Do all your research ahead of time and come here to execute a purchase only. Otherwise, you will end up frustrated like the rest of us.

This was the only location that had gas containers left in the city and the only way they'd sell you one is if you purchased one of their overpriced generators.
It's not nice to gouge your fellow citizens when there is a freakin disaster going on.  Have some morals.

How could anyone give this place a bad review?  This place is clutch.  It always comes through.  When it doubt, head to Nuthouse.  It is a nuthouse though - just head to the second floor!  It's like a mini bed bath and beyond up there.  I could spend hours (ok, maybe minutes) browsing the aisles and looking at all the junk... um, I mean useful stuff!  You never know what you might find.  It comes with a price tag though.

Seriously, they have everything!  Even a nice selection of sleds which came in handy last Saturday during the "storm" (aka nemo).

Best, most random, hardware store ever.  And they are open 24 hours!

    update:

I contacted the Better Business Bureau and the Dept of Consumer Affairs and both agencies were unable to get Nuthouse Hardware to discuss the situation.  The Dept of Consumer Affairs said they were told every time they called that the person who handle complaints was not in and would never return their call. The BBB has since given them an F rating.

Staff is rude.  asked one guy for help mounting my TV on the wall, 1 didnt even look up from his computer, the other, after my detailed explanation, said in a condescending tone "Yep, I definitely cannot help you with that" and walked away!

Some other guy tried helping me, but when i started asking questions, he offered to do the job at my apt for $150.

Too bad i live 2 blocks away. I would have given them my business 10X since moving in, but i much prefer the one on 33rd instead.

Wonder how they're open still?  Maybe a revenue stream 24/7 is how they do it.

    AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Probably the worst hardware store I have ever encountered. Try getting service in this place...it's as if you are invisible.
At least the woman upstairs was helpful, but the guys downstairs, forget it.
Next time I will make the extra trip to Home Depot.

This rating is for the convenience of having a 24-7 hardware store and nothing more.  The staff is not overly friendly and does not go out of their way to help.  The prices are not the greatest value.  But if you are in a bind or doing a project late at night, this place rocks

Sometimes in the city that never sleeps, you need a real Nuthouse. I mean it. There's nothing quite like that moment when you're scrambling to get something accomplished and you realize that the rest of the city may not be working on the 24 hour schedule you're on. There are times that your fire alarm won't stop going, you desperately need an air conditioner, you want to fix that squeaky dresser or you need an extra pair of keys cut... after everyone else closes up shop.

But not Nuthouse. This 24/7 Hardware store gets the job done happily, efficiently, and at any time of the day. And they really do have everything and anything you might desire in the housewares sector. Also, if you call - a real human actually answers the phone. And is friendly and helpful. At 3am.

Sometimes shit happens and when everyone else is asleep, Nuthouse has your back.

I am craving a good hardware store in my neighborhood but have come to terms with the fact that it might not happen anytime soon. I have the next best thing, hmm, actually it is better, a 24 hour, filled to the brim store- Nuthouse. I can spend hours in here when all I went there for was a plunger?! They have a locksmith, cleaning products, tools, an entire kitchen, bathroom, appliance section, and TOYS!

When you need a hardware store check out Nuthouse.

This place is wild, a total nuthouse.  har har.  I'm really jealous it's actually not in my neighborhood, I often need hardware supplies in the middle of the night and have to just scheme and plan for when the store opens.  Plus being 24/7 means they're open on sundays unlike most places.

The people were relatively friendly at first, after breaking the no dog rule and bringing in two, my friend and I were greeted by a friendly lady who asked for our pups names and didn't even mention the sign on the door stating no pets allowed.  We carried them and they made no mess so I don't feel that bad about it, so don't give me shizzz.

We ended up finding a few area rugs we thought could be great buys so we picked them out, of course neither had tags on them and we were informed it'd be awhile for them to look it up but they would.  Of course while we were there we got a call that we had to go so we were suddenly thrown into the circumstance of being in a hurry.  After they finally found one of the rug's prices and my friend made a comment about being willing to wait just not really having 20 min the owner rudely shouted back at us that it wouldn't be 20 min.  I can't remember exactly what he said but it was mean and nasty and really not needed.  The two sales associates kind of looked at each other like it's something that happens on the regular, so I took no personal offense.  I believe this was the owner- although I am not actually sure.

Overall I feel like if you need something and you need it NOW nuthouse will have it, and it won't be a total rip off, but it also won't be the cheapest or most unique option.

Price gougers!!!! Charged $42 dollars for a flashlight the day of Hurricane Sandy.  I went back today (Nov 13), same flashlight was $16.99.  I find this to be extremely unprofessional and unethical.

Excuse me as a I geek out for a sec: Homefront in the HOUSE.

OK, on to the review: One of my friends recently admitted that she pictures me in my house "just taking things apart and like building stuff". OK. I'll take that. It's *kinda* true. I am a shop girl for sure, but usually I'm putting things together (or painting or sewing, but I guess those don't really count) and when I need bits and parts for all of these projects I head to my main men at Homefront.

They have everything. All your basic hardware needs including paint, keys, blinds and tools. They also have all kinds of organizational items and apparently an entire floor dedicated to toys (??).

Homefront is where it's at when you want to take stuff apart or put things together.

    {this review was brought to you without the use of annoying terms like "crafty", "DIY" or "home improvement"}
