Please take care if you are out and about this evening as the Met Office is predicting gusts of wind up to 50-60mph and heavy rain.
Crews are on standby to help in the event of structural damage or accidents caused by the weather, but we’d like Londoners to ensure loose objects such as garden furniture and items on balconies are secure.
Last October, a tree narrowly missed a passing taxi when it was blown over in Southwark, but fortunately no-one was injured.

Like a scene from The Wizard of Oz, a suspected mini tornado struck Harrow this afternoon causing a garage to collapse in Grafton Road. Minor damage was also caused to homes and cars in surrounding roads, but fortunately no-one was injured.
Watch Manager Mark Ritson who was at the scene, said the sky went black, followed by thunder & lightening, hailstones and a tornado. Read more about the incident here: http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/LatestIncidentsContainer_13Ja…
In 2006, a tornado struck in Harlesden, the pic below shows the damage it caused to a house in Clifton Gardens.

The garage, attached to a house was levelled after the tornado hit and minor damage was caused to homes and cars in surrounding roads.

Shadwell firefighters have been temporarily relocated while upgrade work takes place to provide them with a new state of the art fire station.
The crew and their fire engine will operate out of neighbouring Poplar fire station whilst the rebuild takes place, but a normal service will operate.
The building work will last for about a year and will provide the community with a fire station fit for the 21st century.

Take a look at this photo we found in our archives. It was taken shortly after a bus crashed into a shop in Cannon Street, back in 1959.
To see more historical pictures and learn about the history of the Brigade, book a tour at our fantastic museum in Southwark.

Built in 1820, Winchester House on Southwark Bridge Road was home and workplace to London's chief fire officers between 1878 and 1937.

Well done if you correctly guessed that a toaster caused the fire in our previous post.Fortunately an adult and three children escaped uninjured from the fire before we arrived.
Six in 10 accidental fires start in the kitchen, but taking a few simple measures can make all the difference.

Jamie Oliver has mentioned again today that it's a good idea to turn the toaster on its side to cook cheese on toast. Well Jamie we think it's not pucker, in fact it can lead to a fire.
Read why it's best to use the grill if you're having cheese on toast tonighthttp://www.london-fire.gov.uk/LatestIncidentsContainer_warn…

A man had to lower himself out of his bedsit and onto a firefighter's back after a fire on Hollywood Road in West Brompton. There was no smoke alarm in the property so it was a very lucky escape.
We believe the fire was caused by clothing left near an electric heater. So two key safety messages:
1. Get a smoke alarm for every level of your home and check it regularly....

We’ve called yesterday Animal Up A Chimney Day after attending two incidents of our furry friends stuck up flues. A pigeon was trapped in Cricklewood and then later in the day a cat was stuck in Welling.
If you do see an animal trapped or stuck somewhere, call the RSPCA first for advice rather than dialling 999. You can call the RSPCA’s 24 hour helpline on 0300 1234 999. More here http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/animalrescue.asp.

Euston Green Watch paid a special visit to poorly children at Great Ormond Street hospital on Christmas Day. Led by Crew Manager Darren Burnett, the firefighters wanted to spend the morning with children unfortunate enough to be spending Christmas day in hospital.
Young patients on the cardiac ward were given presents donated by LFB staff and the hospital was also given ‘Bernie Bear’. Well done Euston Green Watch and Jonathan from the Education Team, who organised the visit. Here are a few pictures from the visit, we’ll be posting an album later today.

Bexley firefighters spread Christmas cheer by cooking for the elderly at the station on Sunday, 21 December.
Not only was it an opportunity to show off the firefighters’ cooking skills but it was also to look out for those most at risk from fire and to give important fire safety advice.
A third of people who died in accidental fires in London last year were receiving care services. Firefighters across London are working hard to reduce the risk of those most vulnerable.

In the last 24 hours we've rescued four people from three serious fires across London. Yesterday morning two men were led to safety via a ladder from a house fire in Canning Town.
Then in the early hours of this morning firefighters saved a man from a flat fire (pictured) in Enfield. When our crews arrived they found the man in the bedroom overcome by smoke. His smoke alarm had been disconnected which is a lesson to us all to check that our smoke alarms are working.

In November, we revealed that the number of cannabis factory fires we attend are at an all time high. Last year we attended one fire in a cannabis factory every fortnight.
That same month, our young fire cadets joined staff from across the Brigade in coming together to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. Here’s a picture of them forming a poppy ahead of Remembrance Day.

Our crews are no strangers to animal rescues and in October, Wandsworth firefighter Josh Read made sure a job in Roehampton had the purr-fect end, when he successfully revived a moggy that was rescued from a six pump fire.
October was also a busy month for training exercises with three 12 pump scenarios taking place across the Brigade in Clapham, Wembley and Sutton.

August saw our firefighters kitted out with brand new uniforms to wear when they are out and about in the capital advising Londoners about fire safety.
The new trousers, t-shirts, short sleeved shirts, jacket and sweatshirts replaced the previous uniform which was over 20 years old. We think the new uniform looks really smart!

Amir was selected for Team England to compete in the hammer event in Glasgow and a throw of 69.38m secured him a sixth place finish in the final.
