Russia has been reportedly infiltrating schools in occupied Crimea with Kremlin propaganda. School history textbooks in Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula have been amended to include Moscow's spin on how the territory was illegally seized by the Kremlin earlier this year.

Ukraine News One: 'Novorossiya' flag appears uncannily like 'Dixie' (VIDEO)

Mercenary fighters and wannabee statelets in eastern Ukraine are not known for their appreciation of America but the Kremlin-backed separatists raised eyebrows when they adopted a flag for their self-declared territory of Novorossiya strikingly similar to the American Confederate flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, except for the omission of stars.

Ukraine News One: Kremlin-backed insurgents parade captives before Russian TV (VIDEO)

A Ukrainian military spokesman has said that six Ukrainian servicemen are being held by Kremlin-backed insurgents in eastern Ukraine. Vladyslav Seleznyov uploaded to his Facebook page a video in which Russian journalists interrogate the captive servicemen, asking them provocative questions. The video shows the six captured men sitting at the table with microphones of Russian TV channels put in front of them.

Ukraine News One: Anti-terrorist operation kills scores of insurgents near Kramatorsk (VIDEO)

Hours before the resumption peace talks between Ukraine and Russia were set to resume on 10 June in St. Petersburg, Ukrainian media reported that more than 40 Kremlin-backed militants were killed overnight near Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in intense battles.

Ukraine News One: Citizens from Luhansk, Donetsk and Crimea seek shelter in other parts of Ukraine (VIDEO)

Fighting has been continuing around Slovyansk, with pro-Moscow militants flooding across Ukraine's porous border with Russia to battle against Ukrainian troops. Many of the Kremlin-backed fighters are reportedly from Chechnya, an impoverished region known for instability and violence. As a result of the fighting and volatility, increasing numbers of refugees are pouring out of Luhansk, Donetsk and Crimea.

Ukraine News One: Kramatorsk stalemate; Kremlin-backed fighters hunker down in besieged eastern city(VIDEO)

Insurgent strongholds in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine remained besieged by Ukrainian soldiers on 8 June. Many residents of both cities have either fled, or sent their children out of the cities. The main highway linking Slovyansk and the Russian border, a route crowded with trucks just a few weeks ago, is reportedly deserted. In places the tarmac is chewed up by the impact of mortar fire. Petro Poroshenko during his inaugural speech on 7 June vowed to press on with Ukraine's anti-terrorist operations in the region, calling on Kremlin-backed separatists to return to Russia.

Ukraine News One: Slovyansk under siege; residents of eastern Ukrainian city evacuate children amid fighting (VIDEO)

Fighting continued in and around the stronghold of Kremlin-backed insurgents in Slovyansk and neighbouring Kramatorsk on 8 June, a day after Petro Poroshenko vowed in his presidential inaugural address to seek out and destroy separatists 'with blood on their hands.' Poroshenko in his speech said Ukraine would endeavour to open a corridor for Russian fighters to Russia's neighbouring Rostov province if they laid down their weapons and made an orderly retreat. In Luhansk province, meanwhile, Armed Don Cossacks were preparing to return to their native Russia.

Ukraine News One: Ukraine marks trinity Sunday; Poroshenko says God will help nation overcome challenge (VIDEO)

President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Ukrainians on Trinity Sunday, or Pentecost, a church holiday that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in a house on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The day is considered the birthday of the Orthodox Church, and has been solemnly celebrated as such since ancient times. In a statement published on his official website, Poroshenko said the holiday symbolizes the unity and eternal victory of truth and hope. Poroshenko said that he believes that with the help of God, Ukrainians will overcome historical challenges they face today. Throughout his political career, Poroshenko has stressed his affiliation with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church headquartered in Moscow.

Ukraine News One: Gas talks between Ukraine, EU and Russia resume in Brussels (VIDEO)

The next trilateral meeting on gas between representatives of Russia, the EU and Ukraine will take place on 9 June in Brussels. The meeting comes only a day before the 10 June the deadline, set by Gazprom for the Ukrainian side to resolve issues regarding payment for delivered Russian gas. If agreement is not reached, gas deliveries to Ukraine could be cut off as early as 11 June. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week that Russia may cut gas supplies to Europe in the event of unlawful reverse gas deliveries to Ukraine. Russian officials say Kyiv currently owes Moscow about 1.5 billion USD for November-December deliveries which were sold at the old price of 268 USD per 1,000 cubic meters. Russia has not received any payments for April-May deliveries at the current price of 485 USD per 1,000 cubic meters, worth an estimated 3 billion USD

Ukraine News One: 500 Luhansk orphans flee violence in eastern Ukraine, reach Odesa

A train carrying nearly five hundred children, fleeing violence in Luhansk, arrived at a railway station in the port city of Odesa.The group evacuated out of Luhansk consisted of children who have either been orphaned or lack adequate parental care.
