Pet Central--Murray Hill

From what I have seen, Murray Hill seems to be a very good place to have pets...

This place also gets good reviews...not enough of them, but that this is not some huge place

It's a small place, but they have all the premium food brands you would want for your pet - even brands that the huge stores don't carry.  And I like that most of the food they have come in smaller bags, considering most people in the city have to carry home with the bags, no need to lug a 20lb bag when a 10lb bag will do.  Also, prices are competitive to the bigger chains and, in many cases, even slightly cheaper.

If there is something you need/want and they don't have it, they will order it for you at no charge.

Staff was low-to-medium-helpful. I tend to do a great deal of shopping for my dog in my neighborhood (NOT Midtown East!), so I guess this is maybe just what you get in the city? I wouldn't know...

I was surprised that out of the three people working, not one of them offered to step out from behind the counter to help me with my dog shampoo issues...like, seriously, it's 3 feet. That's rule #1 of retail sales!

Also, the girl who rang me up did not say thank you, and I just spent $60 at their store. You're welcome!

Ever since my cat was put on a low protein diet, I've always kept an eye out for pet supply stores that sell items that suit his needs.  Surprisingly, the larger chains don't always stock what I need, so often I have to turn to smaller stores such as this one.  I was not looking for pet food the day I wandered by this store, but when I saw its clean, attractive exterior I decided to take a peek.

There seem to generally be two types of pet shops: newer looking, clean, super organized ones and then ones that look like they opened when Ford was still President and get swept about once a month.  This one is the former.  I don't know how long they've been open, but this store was very clean, brightly lit and its products were laid out in an open and welcoming way.  No cramming into aisles to find stuff while other pet lovers squish by you here.  I was able to find what I needed (Wellness cat pouch food) almost immediately.  They carry a wide array of toys for animals too and other supplies (including, seriously, little boots for dogs).

The staff was very pleasant and helpful, which was a nice thing to see (attitudes and pet shops range from super friendly to downright nasty) and the price on the items were comparable to just about any other store I've found them at.

Another plus is that this store is right near my job so now if I need pet food in a pinch, I know where to go!

This store is near my office, so I started coming here when I didn't have time to go to my usual store.  Now I am a die-hard loyal customer.  The toys are high quality, although they are kind of pricey compared to prices from online merchants.

The real reasons to shop here are the food and the service.  They have all the best quality food here (Wellness, Evo, etc), and they are CHEAPER than the big chains.  And the staff actually knows everything about all the products, including what is in the food and can have intelligent conversations and dispense helpful and appropriate advice.  They also have a ton of high quality, natural treats.

As a regular customer, they make things even more convenient because if you need something that they don't have, they order it for you and call you when it comes in, which is usually within a day or so.  I don't ever need to go anywhere else.

Also, they deliver!  And not the kind of delivery where you go in and make your purchase and they deliver it later...the real kind where you just call them and tell them what you want, and they bring it to you at your convenience.  This is especially valuable in NYC if you want to buy that 30lb bag of dog food but don't feel like dealing with the hassle of dragging it home.

Also, the staff are just plain nice and a pleasure to deal with, which makes the whole experience that much more positive.

This is a family owned chain, and they are true animal lovers. They recently adopted three harder-to-place cats from their local no-kill shelter Bideawee and the cats now live safely and happily in their stores! They work with shelters and help promote adoptions and in general are helpful, friendly, and have your pet's best interests in mind.
