Good reviews and the usual complaint or two...a good number of people have a real thing for the banana pudding here ( except for one person who doesn't like bananas)

Hicksville, NYOrdered for a company birthday and the cupcakes and the pudding were a hit! I wasn't originally going to get the pudding but after reading all the reviews I felt I needed to. It was a good decision the pudding was awesome!!!
Also went in there on 2 other occasions and was not disappointed. Next time I want to try a slice of the coconut cake!
Will definitely be ordering from them again! -

Meh - Not really all that impressive. They have this thing though that is worth it. Take a picture - put it on instagram and tag them and you get a free cupcake. At the time I went they didn't have the free mini cupcakes so they gave me a full size cupcake. Their full size cupcakes are $3 and change. Just to post them on instagram??!!! Heck yeah! I opted for their pudding options and tried the banana pudding.
Delicious! I prefer sugar sweet sunshine more but I think that for the area - it's better than nothing. The location is really small so you can't really bring a group of 6 people and expect to all sit inside and eat cupcakes. It's also not a super busy location - it ends up being a little awkward being a loud rowdy group in a small bake shop. It is not as fancy as little cupcake bake shop.
If I'm ever in the area and I'm craving for some banana pudding - I might come back here.
~happy eating! -

Manhattan, NYI tried the Sour Cream Chocolate Pound Cake.
Pros: chocolate chips inside, large portion for a good price, tasted good enough to eat.
Cons: too dry and not as dense as other pound cakes. It's more like a cake than a pound cake. Needs more moisture, nothing special about the taste.
Cannot taste the sour cream at all, so don't let that throw you off.
Wouldn't get it again, but I ate the whole thing when I bought it and thought it did the job. -

Livingston, NJi'd say the cupcakes are mediocre but it's getting four stars cause of the banana pudding!!! -

Westchester County, NYI love their red velvet cupcakes they are moist and the icing is just perfect. I haven't tried the banana pudding but after so many great reviews I might give it a try soon. -

Plainview, NYI am a little torn on this place.
I think it is safe to say that their icing is my favorite. Really for me this place is worth coming back to because the icing is exactly the way I like icing. My boyfriend and friend agreed to. Damn they should just sell bowls of that.
Now okay their cake. Like the flavor is great, the flavors are there. I just do not understand why they are so dry! It sucks because as I was eating these I could tell how incredible they would taste if only they were moist. However moist is not a word I would use to describe these.
It is unfortunate because the potential is there.
I do not think I will be coming back here just for cupcakes, because I see so many amazing reviews about there banana pudding. I guess I am going to have to give that a try sometime soon! -

Upper East Side, Manhattan, NYTHE BANANA PUDDING!
MMMMMMMMM
THE BANANA PUDDING!!
Need I say more? I mean really, this is truly amazing. I'm comparing it too my grandmother's homemade top secret recipe and it really really hits the spot. It is so tasty and creamy and the trifle inside is just spongy and perfect. You can buy a huge bowl or little individual portions (a huge bowl may actually be kinda dangerous...) I really like this bakery... they seemed really down to earth and i thought the prices were really good. One of those places where you feel like honest people are enjoying themselves doing what they are good at. They have lots of options besides banana pudding too.. cupcakes, whole cakes, other sweets.. Lots of red velvet options for the other red velvet lovers out there. Not too sweet, just perfect. Thank god I don't live too close by. -

Long Island, NYSo NYC is into this big cupcake craze right now. I say, who cares, a cupcake is a cupcake, I've had the best, I've had the rest, and buttercup cupcakes are by in of themselves great cupcakes.
However, if you go in there and just get a cupcake, you're shooting yourself in the proverbial foot, because the banana pudding is where it's at folks! This stuff is transcendent. I get a small cup of it and by the time i'm home its all gone. It's that good.
My advice, get the banana pudding. -

New York, NYI am quite a snob when it comes to desserts. I have to say that this place has the best cupcakes in town. service might not always be the best, but I will take a cab, bus, subway, etc. to get here. I have to say that on a couple of occasions, I have gotten a somewhat stale cupcake. red velvet is delicious, as is the chocolate or lemon frosting on plain cake, or the colorful frosting (pink, green, blue, purple) on plain cake. others are okay too, but these are my favorite! -

Manhattan, NYI just moved to the city and am a cupcake/dessert addict! I also love going off yelp reviews especially when your new to an area. I walked into Buttercup Bake shop and the first thing i thought was ehh not so many selections and nothing looked to appealing.
I ended up choosing a red velvet cupcake and a buttercup classic cupcake with chocolate frosting. Dryest cupcake ever and the icing wasnt my favorite. Red velvet was definetly better than the classic fyi! Only ate a bite of each and was over it :/ -

Cupcake lovers (or even layer cake lovers) will find many things to enjoy at Buttercup Bake Shop. A true neighborhood gem that is worth a ten block trip while no longer being a well-kept secret...well at least not a secret to the Yelp community.
Buttercup holds their own in terms of quality against any of the cupcake chains in the city including the likes of Magnolia and Crumbs. Their cupcakes are airy and soft regardless of your preference of flavor and icing. My personal favorite is actually the carrot cake. Moist, chunky, and enormous.
They are definitely not a one-trick pony. I enjoy their muffins, cupcakes, layer cakes, as well as their own banana pudding. My heart is still with the Magnolia version of banana pudding. Yet, this is the next best thing, not to mention the convenience of being able to enjoy an indulgence two blocks from my apartment! -

New York, NYThis place is very convenient for those of us living in Midtown East.
The Red Velvet cupcakes are amazing here, vanilla cupcakes are superb, not to mention the banana pudding with vanilla wafers.
Buttercup Bake Shop is a great place to get high... Off sugar that is. -

Still loving the banana pudding (had it a couple of weeks ago)! I'm back to give shout outs to the other stars that have honored me with their yumminess since my first review.
- rice krispie treats: consistently the same! Sweet, chewy, and easy to break apart.
- mini caramel pecan cheese cake: creamy, nutty, and I'm gonna say it - cute.
- lemon cupcake: lemony and refreshing - one of my favorites!
- hummingbird cupcake: my other favorite!! "banana pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting & chopped pecans"
The staff are nice and helpful. And, if your lucky, they sometimes have free samples (mini cupcakes) for you to try!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We a vanilla, german chocolate, red velvet of course, and the cupcake of the week, pumpkin. The red velvet was good as everyone says it is. German chocolate is okay if you like coconut. Vanilla is standard - much like Magnolia's. But we were all surprised to like the pumpkin best. I had originally wanted the sour cream spice cupcake, but it's a flavor of the week cupcake and wasn't available. Pumpkin was a wonderful substitute!
Will return instead of visiting the Crumbs in the area.-
a cupcake of the week - pumpkin

Buttercup has really really good raspberry lemon trifle. It is a delicious proportion of sweet and sour. I would definitely try this place out for this alone!
The store was opened by the same owners as Magnolia's, but I actually like it better because they use cream cheese frosting for their red velvet cupcakes! -

New York, NYGreat bakery on the East side of Midtown. Strolled in for some dessert after dinner and had some great stuff.
Lady baltimore cake was fantastic. They cut you a GIANT slab that easily can last you 2-3 days. A three layer white cake is filled with coconut, cherries, and almonds then frosted with a marshmallow meringue and more toasted coconuts. Absolutely wonderful when eaten fresh.
The banana pudding was also incredible. One of the best I have ever had. Chunks of bananas and vanilla cake throughout and the pudding itself was the essence of creamy sweet banany goodness.
My last sample was the red velvet cheesecake, which turned out to be disappointing. A circle of red velvet cheesecake is set on a chocolate cookie crust and topped with a cream cheese frosting. I didn't pick up any red velvet flavor whatsoever. It was quite bland. I wouldn't recommend this when you can get the other delicious creations above. -

Hewlett, NYAt first I had a strong animosity for this bakery because I had heard it has the same owners (and thus the same recipes) as Magnolia Bakery. Fortunately, one of my best friends is an avid Buttercup fan so I decided to give their red velvet cupcake a try. Good thing I loved it because otherwise I would never be able to attend said friend's birthday parties. Her birthday cupcakes of choice are almost always from Buttercup :) Nowadays, I never pass the midtown area without stopping in to get a red velvet cupcake from Buttercup. The tangy cream cheese icing complements the red velvet cake perfectly! It's a great price at $2 per cupcake.
Recently my friend and I stopped by for coffee and cupcakes. We split a vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream and it was delicious! The frosting was better than the cake, however. It was creamy but not too sweet-kind of like a melted Hersheys chocolate bar. The shop itself is very colorful. As soon as you walk in, the rainbow display of baked goodies certainly catches your eye. The counter girls were super friendly. They wished us a happy new year with a huge smile on their faces. Happy employees=happy customers. Buttercup, I need you more than anyone darling, you know that I have from the start (okay, maybe not). So build me up, buttercup-don't break my heart.
