Those traffic islands on Upper Broadway are not full of people the way they once were...especially old people back in the day when this was all rent controlled apartment territory and people clung to their big old Upper West Side places till their dying day..
Going by, you would see endless benches of old people, often couples, simply sitting in the sun, often dressed more warmly than the weather called for, sometimes feeding the pigeons..
Paul Simon made a video of his song "Old Friends"-- I wonder if that is still available with the pix of the people on Upper Broadway
Well, I knocked myself out looking for at least ONE old photo of all those old people on the benches, but nothing. Probably nobody thought it was worth recording at the time, even though it was a phenomenon that stretched way up Upper Broadway
