TROUBLE IN HARTFORD - SAFETY ISSUES - LACK OF STANDARDS - POOR LEADERSHIP

FoxCT Video
Wednesday, December 24, 2014    Five Hartford firefighters are accusing the fire department of rampant mismanagement after a slew of incidents, including firefighter arrests and the death of a firefighter in the line of duty. All of them spoke under the condition of anonymity. The department is “in a dangerous place, and if it continues in this direction there are definitely going to be more injuries and potentially firefighter deaths. It’s inevitable,” one firefighter said.

Earlier this month, emails from within the department obtained through the Freedom of Information Act revealed safety concerns in the months and days leading up to the fire that killed firefighter Kevin Bell. Those concerns included empty back-up air tanks and a broken thermal imaging camera used to detect victims or fallen firefighters in smoke-filled conditions. It is still unknown if either of those issues were linked to Bell’s death.

On Tuesday, firefighters claimed they had other non-reported issues rela... [ more ]

Watch Out for the Holiday Mayday: Depression

By Mark Lamplugh

This is the time of year when we all come together to celebrate something, whether it’s Christmas, Hanukah, or whatever tradition you follow during the holiday season. Spending time with our family and friends is something that we do; we ride around on the fire truck, give kids candy canes, have Secret Santas, and throw Christmas parties. December is a time of joy in most of our eyes. Firefighters also know that usually around this time we will see fatalities.

Every year at this time, one particular call from my firefighter experi... [ more ]

ABC7News.com
Wednesday, December 24, 2014    Firefighters in San Jose from Fire Station 16 are patrolling the streets, instead of remaining in their firehouse because of a potentially dangerous mold problem. It's likely this fire station could be out of commission for a long time.

Before walking through the doors leading to the TV room at San Jose Fire Department's Station 16 on South King Road, ABC7 News was warned it was considered a hot zone because of mold. Inside, more plastic sheeting around the kitchen area, cleaning supplies on the counter and red tape saying 'Do Not Enter.'

BATON ROUGE FF INJURES LEG AT APT FIRE

Tuesday, December 23, 2014    A Baton Rouge firefighter suffered a leg injury when two fire departments battled an apartment building blaze early Sunday that damaged all eight units.
Firefighters who were called to the Hampton Court Apartments, 2424 Drusilla Lane, about 4:45 a.m. Sunday, saw smoke coming from the building, Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Mark Miles said in a news release.

They found fire in the wall near the heating unit of a downstairs apartment. But when firefighters started putting out the flames, they saw that the fire had gotten into the wall and spread to the attic.

Crews removed Sheetrock from the walls and eventually cut a hole in the roof to control the blaze, Miles’ release says.

Baton Rouge and St. George Fire Department firefighters controlled the fire by about 6:10 a.m. and kept the fire from spreading through the whole building, the release says.
