Doctors from all over the world are being recruited to join the fight against Ebola in West Africa, including medical care workers from this area.
Dr. Dario Gonzalez, the Associate Medical Director of the New York City Fire Department, is one of them.
"It doesn't take long to realize how serious things are," Dr. Gonzalez says. "One child came in...and he had that glazed look, sort of like a mask, not much of expression... Came back the next day, and he had died."
Dr. Gonzalez was recruited by AmeriCares and is currently working in a clinic managed by the International Organization for Migration in Buchanan, Liberia. He'll stay in West Africa until December 29th.
Earlier this week, Dr. Tom Frieden, the Director of the CDC, said Liberia “has the upper hand against” ebola, and Dr. Gonzalez agrees that he has seen progress.
"We're hoping this isn't just a lull in the wave," of cases, he said, "and this is actually a trend that's developing."
