MEMPHIS FF INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE Monday, August 25, 2014  One Memphis Firefighter was taken to Germantown Methodist Hospital in stable condition while fighting a house fire on the 4000 block of Kennibec Cove Saturday afternoon. No civilians were injured in the fire, but the Red Cross provided assistance to the home's three adults and one child.     Tweet KY APPARATUS FALLS INTO SINK HOLE Monday, August 25, 2014  The tables were turned for local firefighters Sunday who had to have their truck rescued after an accident. Officials say a Summersville Fire Department truck pulled into a parking lot to turn around during a funeral procession in Greensburg, Kentucky. When the truck made the turn, it fell through the basement of an auto parts store. The parking lot was built over a former service station which is connected to the store. Green County received an estimated 4 inches of rain Saturday night. Officials say the accident was non-rain related. There were no injuries.     Tweet 2 FIREFIGHTERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY-SOUTH AMERICA Saturday, August 23, 2014  Yesterday, tragically, a ship carrying timber from the north and heading towards the port of Buenos Aires, caught fire and exploded twice near the city of Zárate, Buenos Aires Province in north, leaving two firefighters dead and 17 injured. Yesterday  at 17:45 Urbana ship declared an emergency by a fire in the engine room which at first was controlled by his crew. Around an hour later there was the first explosion that caused a significant number of injuries among the crew, including the captain. " At the time he began working staff Argentina Naval Prefecture, which unfortunately was involved in a second explosion 40 minutes later, a situation that may have occurred due to accumulation of gas and that cost the lives of two Firefighters-from extreme burns. [ more ]     Tweet FIREFIGHTER DIES OF CANCER: Steve Skipton Was The Well-Known and Popular Co-Owner of SConFire.com REST IN PEACE, Brother Steve. Saturday, August 23, 2014  It's with shock and deep regret that we pass on to you that a good friend of FFCC-and the fire service, FF/EMT Steve Skipton, lost his tough and extremely brave battle with cancer today. Steve gave so much of himself over the years to various communities as a member of the Goose Creek, SC FD and in NJ at the Bellmawr Park (NJ) Fire Department. He was a medic working EMS for UMDNJ both in Camden City and Newark. Steve volunteered to go to NY and spent countless days and weeks on site after 9/11 with the NJ EMS task force. Steve leaves behind his wife and four children...two boys , 19 and 23, and twin 7-year-old girls. RIP STEVE.     Tweet FIREFIGHTER DOWN IN IDAHO-FLOWN OUT AFTER REPORTED FALL OFF APPARATUS Saturday, August 23, 2014  A volunteer Firefighter with the Deary Rural (Idaho) Fire Department was airlifted from Kendrick Grade near state Highway 3 to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center on Friday morning after being injured. A spokesperson for the Deary department said no other information was being provided about the injured volunteer, citing his understanding of HIPAA privacy rules. Initial reports stated that the volunteer was a man between the ages of 40 and 49, and that he fell off a vehicle. According to Idaho State Lands, a fire was discovered in that area early Friday that burned about a tenth of an acre. Two other small fires had occurred in the area as a result of the storm -- one west of Galloway Road between Deary and Kendrick, and the other near Harvard. All three were contained by Friday afternoon, Svancara said. "We got precipitation along with the lightning," said Jason Svancara, fire warden for the Idaho Department of Public Lands. This helped keep the fi... [ more ]     Tweet APPARATUS ROLLOVER IN MO - FFs INJURED Saturday, August 23, 2014  A red fire engine overturned this afternoon just north of Springfield city limit. Two people who were inside the Ebenezer Fire truck suffered minor injuries, said Heath Dalton, assistant fire chief. A third person in the truck was not injured, Dalton said. No other vehicles were involved. Dalton said the truck and crew were returning to the station from a car crash in Polk County. He declined to comment on a cause of the rollover. The accident happened about 5 p.m. on Greene County WW east of Missouri 13, according to Ozarks Traffic.     Tweet Kilgore Man Attacks the Kilgore Fire Department Saturday, August 23, 2014  The Kilgore Police Department says at around 1 a.m. Saturday morning, the Kilgore Fire Department responded to a fire on the 1500 block of Peach Street. The house was fully engulfed and unoccupied. The fire was being extinguished when one of the firefighters saw 39-year-old Kenny Wayne Davlin carrying a gun behind his back. Police report that Davlin could've been intoxicated.  Police report that Kilgore Fire Marshal Brandon Bigos tried to take Davlin's gun, and take him into custody.  Davlin was able to escape and run inside of a house. Police report that Davlin came back outside with an AR-15 Rifle and pointed it at the firefighters working the fire scene. The firefighters took cover behind a Kilgore Fire Truck. Fire Marshal Bigos shot Davlin who was later transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center. His medical condition is unknown at this time. The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation. [ more ]     Tweet KY FF SUFFERED BURNS OVER 50% OF HIS BODY IN AERIAL INCIDENT Saturday, August 23, 2014  Two central Kentucky firefighters are still hospitalized a day after they were shocked by a power line while helping out with an "ice bucket challenge." Campbellsville Fire Capt. Tony Grider was in critical condition in the University of Louisville Medical Center's burn unit Friday afternoon, a hospital spokesman said. Simon Quinn was in fair condition there. Both men were on the fire truck's ladder when it got too close to a power line after dumping water on Campbellsville University's marching band on Thursday in the charity stunt to raise awareness for the disease ALS. Campbellsville Fire Chief Kyle Smith told WDRB-TV (http://bit.ly/1winyCW) on Friday that Grider suffered burns on 55 percent of his body and was sedated. Two other firefighters were hurt, but they are out of the hospital. [ more ]     Tweet FIREFIGHTER STAFFING-IT'S NOT COMPLICATED: TOO FEW FIREFIGHTERS RESULT IN PREDICTABLE & PREVENTABLE RESULTS Saturday, August 23, 2014  Lake County (Florida) Fire Rescue’s Station 20 in Umatilla is not staffed most of the time because firefighters are needed at other stations when firefighters are on leave. But on Aug. 11 when a fire broke out in the Lakeside RV Park near the station, it happened to be staffed that day with two firefighters.Firefighters ended up rescuing an elderly woman from the mobile home, fire officials confirmed. If firefighters had not been at the station, the next closest station would have had to respond, said Brian Gamble, vice president of the Professional Firefighters of Lake County. “It would have added five to six minutes in response time,” he said. “A trailer burns quickly. It would have been a very different outcome: worse than it was.” Gamble said there are not enough firefighters to adequately staff county fire stations like Station 20. [ more ]     Tweet FIREFIGHTER SERIOUSLY BURNED ON A PROPANE BBQ RUN Saturday, August 23, 2014  A St Louis (MO) received serious burns while removing a BBQ tank. The incident took place near the intersection of Missouri Avenue and Pestolozzi. Firefighters said they were initially called to a porch fire. However, as one member of the firefighter crew removed a propane tank, it ignited and sent flames into the firefighters face. The firefighter suffered serious burns to his face and chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital and admitted to the burn unit. Captain Gregg Favre of the St. Louis Fire Department said the burns are not believed to be life threatening. However, he added that fire injuries are not immediately obvious and sometimes may cause lung damage. The firefighter was conscious and breathing at the scene.     Tweet WALL COLLAPSE INJURES CAMDEN FFs CBS Philly Video Friday, August 22, 2014  A firefighter and one other were injured during a two-alarm blaze that spread across two rowhomes in Camden, New Jersey Friday morning. The fire broke out on the second floor of a vacant home around 4 a.m. on the 900 block of South 4th Street. A firefighter was evaluated on the scene after a wall almost collapsed on him, but appears to be fine. Another person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Quinn Friday, August 22, 2014  Campbellsville (KY) FD Capt. Tony Grider, 41, remains in critical condition this morning at the University of Louisville Hospital. Firefighter Simon A. Quinn, 22, is now reported to be stable. As you know, Captain Grider and Quinn were rushed to the hospital Thursday afternoon after being seriously injured when electricity from a high-voltage line arced onto the ladder of a fire truck they were using in a student fundraising event — a variation of the popular Ice Bucket Challenge — at Campbellsville University. Two other firefighters — Capt. Steve Marrs, 37, and Alex Johnson, 28, — also suffered electrical shocks but were released after being treated in Campbellsville. It happened shortly before noon yesterday, as the firefighters assisted Campbellsville University students with the event to raise research money for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. [ more ]     Tweet LINE OF DUTY DEATH-JAPANESE FIRE OFFICER DIES WHILE ATTEMPTING RESCUE Thursday, August 21, 2014   A Japanese fire officer with a rescue unit operating in torrential rain-hit Hiroshima died in the Line of Duty while trying to save an infant. Record amounts of rain early Wednesday triggered massive landslides. 39 people died and 7 others are missing.53-year-old  Fire Officer Noriyoshi Masaoka served as deputy leader of the local rescue team of the Hiroshima City FD. Masaoka rushed to the area where 8 people were reportedly trapped in landslides. He tried to save a three-year-old boy and his mother. Masaoka was holding the boy in his arms and had nearly left the disaster site. But Masaoka, the boy, and his mother were all caught in another landslide. Several hours later, he was found dead in the mud. The boy also died, while his mother survived with an injury. Our condolences to all affacted. RIP.     Tweet DETAILS: FIRE CAPTAIN IN CRITICAL CONDITION, OTHER FF'S INJURED IN TOWER LADDER ELECTRICAL SHOCK INCIDENT AT COLLEGE "ICE CHALLENGE" EVENT Thursday, August 21, 2014   As you know, 4 Firefighters with the Campbellsville (Taylor County, KY) FD were shocked with one being critical, while helping the Campbellsville University marching band with an ALS ice "bucket" challenge this morning. 2 of the injured firefighters are being treated at and will be released from a Campbellsville hospital today. The other two firefighters were transported to University of Louisville Hospital. One of them is in critical condition and the other is in fair condition. In critical condition from burns at University of Louisville Hospital is Captain Tony Grider and Firefighter Simon Quinn is in fair condition-who were reportedly in the bucket. The other Captain and Firefighter who were on the ground, were treated and released.
