Cops Object to Gun Bans at NFL Games- WNYC

Cops Object to NFL Ban on Guns in Stadiums

Thursday, March 06, 2014

The head of New York City's Sergeants' union says an NFL rule banning off-duty and retired officers from carrying guns into its stadiums puts police and the public at risk.

The NFL asked team owners in September to start enforcing the ban.

Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevelopent Association called the policy "ludicrous and insane."

"We have malls across the country where we're getting incidents of shootings. We have schools across the country where there are incidents of shootings. Why not NFL stadiums?"

The NFL says on on average, it employs more than 500 private security personnel and 150 on-duty police officers at every NFL game. It also says armed off-duty officers could create confusion in tense situations.
