Not Glamorish, Just Hammacher Schlemmerish....

There used to be this joke about WHAT do you get "for the man who has everything,"--and also of course, where do you find it?

And an easy answer was : Hammacher Schlemmer, the Midtown shop that specialized in unusual items ( for instance, as I remember, the sold a "smokeless ashtray" which sucked in fumes an neutralied them--supposedly--long before anyone else had ever thought of it.

I read the word GIZMO in the Wikipedia article I will cite, and thought THAT IS IT, the right word for so much of what H-S sold (most of the Wikipedia article is given over to the store' s claim to be the longest continuing seller of something-or-other, and arcane business history before where it came today in Midtown)==here:

From here, the company moved into its present location at 147 East 57th Street, in 1926. Located on the site of the famous Huntington Stables and near Park Avenue, the modern twelve-story building has housed hardware, gifts, housewares, bath, dressing room and closet furnishings, kitchen and fireplace equipment, furniture and a vast array of the gadget and gizmos that Hammacher Schlemmer is known for.

I guess, I don't know how to say this, gifts from Hammacher Schlemmer were always considered  --well, interesting but also sort of tacky somehow ( its loyal customers would dispute that fiercely, of course),

And that Danny Kaye once sang in some 1940's musical, " You are so glamorish...you make all other girls just seem so Hammacher Schlemmerish..." but I forget which  musical.. maybe it was the original "Lady in the Dark", the Ira Gershwin-Kurt Weill outing into psychoanalysis and dream sequences...which also included Kaye doing material right from his famous night club act.
