What a year we've had!

We're cooking up some exciting endeavors for 2017 and can't wait to welcome you back to Governors Island in the Spring. As the sun sets on 2016, we're taking a look back at the highlights from our most successful season yet.

10 New Acres of Public Space in NYC

In July, we opened the Hills almost one year ahead of schedule. Nearly 40,000 of you joined us to wander, relax, slide and experience the breathtaking views of New York Harbor on opening week!

Over 80 Organizations Activating the Island With Free Programming

Visitors experienced nearly 500 workshops, art exhibits, performances and festivals through our OpenHouseGI program, bringing organizations from all five boroughs to the Island, New York City's shared space for art and play.

Miles of Car Free Cycling

For the first time in years, cycling enthusiasts were able to pedal around the entire perimeter of the Island. There's nothing like waving at Lady Liberty from your bike (or the Island's famous surreys)!

The Longest Slide in New York City

Thousands of children -- and the young at heart -- dared to wind down our new 57 foot slide at Slide Hill, the longest one in New York City.

A Record Number of Visitors

More New Yorkers came to the Island than ever, with nearly 600,000 boarding the ferry during the 2016 season.

1,700 Volunteers Helped Keep the Island Beautiful

Volunteers contributed nearly 8,000 hours of upkeep to our spectacular new and historic landscapes. From planting and mulching to weeding and pruning, thanks to their green thumbs, the Island has never looked  greener!

Thank you for making memories on Governors Island in 2016!

We can't wait to share what's in store for 2017.
