New York City is home to large populations of immigrants originally from Russia and Ukraine. Many moved to the US when both nations were part of the former Soviet Union.
The close historical and cultural ties between the countries can also be seen in the strong connections and friendships that exist across the communities in the US.
The BBC spoke to two sets of friends - each with one born in Russia and the other in Ukraine - to hear how the current crisis has affected how they regard their respective homelands.
Produced for the BBC by Irina Khokhlova.
Additional footage by Igor Shorman and Katya Soldak
