One of the worst stories I read about this kind of outage was not funny at all: organized gangs in England were tearing up copper wiring for all kinds of things to sell on the black market,...in fact, I do not know if they have this under control yet there or not

Wily Raccoon Knocks Power Out in Summit, NJ

A wily raccoon knocked power out to some 3,100 JCP&L customers in Summit, New Jersey around 2 a.m. Thursday.
Spokesman Gerry Ricciardi said the animal crawled under a fence
and on top of "an energized piece of electric equipment" at the Summit
substation. Power was restored to most customers by 9 a.m. Ricciardi
said a few lingering outages were repaired by 2:30 p.m.
