San Diego, CAFor any fans of Harry Potter - whether you're partial to the movies or the books - this exhibit is fun. We spent about two hours going through the different rooms, reading the plaques associated with each display, and stopping to listen to the audio pieces provided through the tour (an extra $7, but definitely worth it, in my opinion).
If you're a fan, you'll appreciate seeing things like the outfit that a very tiny Daniel Radcliffe wore during the battle scene at the end of The Sorcerer's Stone, or the dress Hermione wore to the Yule Ball, or Ron's wand, broken and "fixed" with Spello-Tape. You get a chance to pull mandrake roots from their pots, feel like you've shrunk just a bit walking through Hagrid's hut, and try your hand at quidditch (though, if they wanted to make it a challenge, they should have allowed people to play the part of Keeper...)
3D models of Buckbeak, the head of the Hungarian horntail Harry battled, a centaur and Kreacher and Dobby also make appearances. You see the boys' dorm room, the Great Hall, the potions dungeon, and are re-acquainted with some of the characters central to Harry's life.
The magic is there, for fans of Harry and his friends. The only bummers are that you're not allowed to take pictures. I get why they did it, but still...boo hiss for that. Also, aside from the mandrake roots and quidditch, it wasn't very interactive. I think that's a point they missed when putting this exhibit together.
Still, the geek girl inside me totally enjoyed seeing the props and hearing interesting bits of trivia about the design and production process. It was a bit pricey, but I got a discount through work, which helped. -

Battery Park, Manhattan, NYEvent: 2 adults visiting Nathan Sawaya's 'The Art of Brick' exhibit
Pros:
-Exhibit was cool and larger than expected
-Equally as interesting for kids/adults
-Adequate gift shop and informed staff
Cons:
-$47 for 2 adults to see only one exhibit
-Had to wait about 20mins once inside

I came here for the Harry Potter Exhibit as a substitute for not being able to visit the Universal Orlando or London Studio. There was a groupon deal for tickets so I was excited. I brought the bf with me and we got there fairly early. There were still a lot of little kids around.
There was a photo op while we were waiting in line with a green screen and holding wands. Pass, they always charge you an arm and a leg for those. While we were in line, we had numerous warnings that photography was not allowed. And we should have no reasons to take our phones out for photos. I think this is totally unfair, we paid for admission, why can't we take photos?
Anyway, the tour started off with a sorting with the sorting hat. Cute but I wonder how many heads it's been on. Yuck, but it was nice that the recordings were for the houses the kids wanted to be in. Then the tour continued. It wasn't really organized. I know people had the audio recordings so they were lingering around certain props so that was annoying. I wanted to keep moving but people were stopped; just let me pass then!
All in all, I liked seeing the costumes and props but the biggest killer was the lack of photography. -

Brooklyn, NYI visited Discovery Times Square as a somewhat seasoned New Yorker, and I must say I was VERY impressed. Not only are the staff the nicest people I've encountered in Times Square ever (generally employees in this area have the sour "I hate tourists and everyone I'm forced to interact with" disposition), but also the exhibits I visited were incredibly interesting, in-depth, and interactive. Great for children and adults. The hurricane machine in the shipwrecked exhibit is a must-experience and the Body Worlds exhibit is unbelievable, if you're interested in looking at real human bodies up close and in a way you'll likely never see them again. All in all, seriously worth the money and a great way to spend a few hours. -

The exhibit starts off with a "real" sorting hat which was fun and the exhibit itself is set up nicely but its basically prop after prop which kind of gets boring after a while. I expected a more interactive experience for the steep price. -

-Go online and find a $5 off coupon code to present to the clerk (normally $28, $23 after coupon).
-You get a mandatory photo with your choice of scarf and wand
-Sorting hat decides which school you belong to for volunteers
-The whole exhibition took less than 40 minutes while reading about 70% of everything
-Photos are not allowed but I took some anyways
-There is a gift shop at the end with some very neat items and replica

New York, NYAs a pretty big nerd, I came into the Harry Potter Exhibition with high expectations. A few friends and I each had $16 Groupons for the exhibit; I think they're about $27 regular price. I had a good time, but am really glad I didn't pay full price. Why? Well, here we go:
Cool stuff:
-They actually have a Sorting Hat, which was adorable for the little kids.
-They have a few interactive things, like the mandrakes and the Quidditch hoops.
-Pretty extensive gift shop, but no Hufflepuff stuff. Not that I cared...Slytherin all the way baby.
-It was cool to see the actual clothes the actors wore in the movie. The biggest takeaway for me was "Holy crap, these people are tiny."
Not so awesome:
-No pictures allowed. At all. I was definitely surprised by that.
-You pretty much have to pay extra for the "audio tour," or otherwise you're just looking at the costumes, props, etc. without learning anything about them. I forgot my wallet yesterday, and alas had no money.
-Not very interactive. You're mostly following a line of people looking at props. Which isn't to say the props are boring--they're actually pretty cool!
So, if you're going to do this, I would recommend shelling out the additional money for the audio tour. I probably won't be back again, but if I were to revisit, I'd definitely spring for the audio tour. -

Piscataway Township, NJMy friend and I went here for the Harry Potter exhibit and we loved it! Even if we weren't allowed to take any pictures. It's not just a bunch of props stuck willy nilly in glass cases with long explanations. After you go in, there are two components, the sorting and the movie clips, you do as group that really get you in the proper mindset for the rest of exhibit and bring back some of the joy you felt delving into those pages. Then the door opens to reveal the Hogwarts express and the rest of the exhibit.
I enjoyed the extra effort they put into make rooms as realistic as possible. I really felt like I was walking through a Gryffindor dorm and Hagrid's hut. It was really wonderful to get up close to the props and see the level of detail that went into them. My favorites were all the Horcruxes and the Half Blood Prince's book. I also really liked that they had personalized wand for everyone in the movie. Some of them were real works of art.
People have complained about the shortness of this exhibit, but I think I prefer it. It gives you time to really drink in each object and admire the detail without rushing to see everything. Also, there are very few places to sit in these exhibit so your feet get pretty tired by the end. As it was, we spent 2 hours in the exhibit.
Warning: Do not buy anything from the gift shop. They are WAY, WAY overpriced. My friend found a book there that she bought for $50 that they were selling for $150. Don't give into temptation! Go to Amazon!
Also, there's a DC Cupcake stand right outside the gift shop. Better to spend your money on the best cupcakes in the world. I didn't have cupcake from this particular location, but the ones in DC are amazing.
