Fairway Kips Bay

Believe I have mentioned a number of times how you see people carrying bags from this store blocks and blocks away...

Meant to review this place but I don't think I ever got around to it.

I have described it before, it is down in a cavernous basement space and usually way too busy to be all that comfortable but their selections and prices are very good ( I can always find exactly the kind of of yogurt I am looking for here, which I can't at some other supermarkets around her, and the prices on for instance V-8 low sodium juice are MUCH less here than other places etc.

I never use their deli, having been exasperated by how long I had to wait the two times i did try it.
I just go to another nearby supermarket like Morton Williams for that instead ( which has a much more relaxed, genteel atmosphere).

My first ever Fairway experience went like this.

I walked in here looking for exactly two things. One: wild salmon. Two: maybe some peaches.

After walking down the stairs (there is one escalator, and it goes up), I rounded the corner and came face to face with AN ENTIRE FREAKING WALL OF PEACHES.

More stone fruit than I'd ever seen in one place. White peaches. Yellow peaches. Donut peaches. Yellow nectarines. Apricots. Red plums. Yellow plums. PLUOTS. I froze. I didn't know what to do. I didn't even know where to look! If I made any sudden movement, would the whole tableau before me disappear, like a mirage in the desert?

I felt as though I'd never seen a grocery store before in my life. Aisle after aisle after aisle of fresh produce, fruit (there was like A WHOLE SEPARATE SECTION FOR MELONS I'm only used to the crappy Food Emporium selection of cantaloupe and next to it, slightly mushy cantaloupe - who even knew there were so many types of melons omg), dairy products, etc. etc. etc. Piles and piles of things I never knew existed (and never knew I absolutely needed). I danced through AN ENTIRE AISLE OF GLUTEN-FREE FOOD. I frolicked through a section of bulk nuts, granola and dried fruit. I coveted jars of pure duck fat. I marveled at the Spanish fig cake. I lost my mind and put a $45 terrine of foie gras in my shopping basket.

As I browsed further and further into the store, my eyes glazed over and my vision turned fuzzy around the edges. When I came back to full awareness, my hand was swiping my credit card at checkout, and I was clutching a bag of, yes, wild salmon and peaches. Along with like 60 other things (but thank god, not the foie).

When I heard that FAIRWAY was opening in the area, I was excited, but that was just the tip once I entered their new market in Kips Bay on East 30th and Second Avenue.

The store is located underground and encompasses a massive area. You enter into the fresh produce area with fruits, vegetables and organic foods fresh for your choosing.

The first aisle is dairy and has everything you could possibly ask for. The many aisles next are like a warehouse of food stuffs and items for your kitchen that just go on and on. They have all types of brands and their pricing, which I thought would be higher than my local market, was comparable on many items and sometimes even less.

They have separate Bakery, Meat and Fish departments with a huge selection of fresh items daily. I am amazed at the amount of fresh food late at night in the meat and fish departments. I find it easier to shop after 9 pm when there are not so many shoppers and the experience can be more relaxed.  However certain areas are closed down by then as well like the fresh salad bar and the cheese sample station.

Their Cheese department is huge and has a wide variety of everything you could possibly ask for.

By shopping here every once and awhile I find myself choosing fresher and healthier foods than in my local market where I tend to purchase the same week after week. At Fairway I feel comfortable trying something new knowing that it is fresh.

After having been in the Upper West Side store, which is cramped and difficult to navigate, I was pleasantly surprised with this warehouse of a food market, and tend to return week after week.

Another Fairway has recently opened on 6th Avenue in Chelsea (to compete with Trader Joe's and Whole Foods I am sure) and it is great to see these fresh markets expanding within the city.

Produce section is like a showroom - super maintained gorgeous selections.

Love the meat and seafood departments- the people are helpful and I cant say this with any degree certainty but I'll bet they're courageous too. The kind of people who fight crime on the weekends and are obsessed with justice... or maybe just volunteer at an animal shelter. I don't know.

Kips Bay Fairway is the best. Worth going there even if you're not too close to it.

Great place.  Salad bar is limited compared to suburban stores.

I generally love fairway. Since it opened a few blocks from my house I do almost all of my grocery shopping here now. Went today and planned on making BBQ ribs for dinner tonight, a couple of hours after shopping when I was ready to start dinner I open the package of ribs and a pungent smell greeted me. While the date on the package said the 8th of August the meat had definitely turned. I went straight there to return it. While they did give me a refund there wasn't much apology or acknowledgment of there being a serious problem. Really disappointing customer service I felt. I'll still go because of convenience/price but I will definitely check the meat carefully before I purchase.

Wow... No rotting fruit? No flies? No dirt on the floor? No long lines of people waiting to check out?! When I first stepped into Fairway, I noticed all of these things right off the bat. The store is a huge and brightly lit with an expansive produce section, deli, fish market and organic section. They really do offer everything under the sun and the prices are quite reasonable for the city.

I've since moved away from Murray Hill but when time permits, will travel uptown to go grocery shopping at Fairway. It's that good. If you're in the neighborhood, skip Gristedes (or "Gross" tedes as I've heard it sometimes called) and the long lines at Trader Joe's and stop by Fairway instead.

Service isn't always that great but the supermarket outweighs the service.

3 stars for service. 5 for the actual supermarket and its offerings.

They offer home delivery for those who need assistance with carrying groceries. The service I had was great. The young lady at checkout knew how to bag my items properly & with care, which is a plus in my book. She also helped me organize them into the cart. She had a genuine smile that made me feel welcomed.

Wow! I had NO idea what I was getting myself into when I entered this store. My sister in law is a fairway junkie and I was somewhat cynical at first. I was thinking of attempting the frugal diet where I don't give all my grocery money to one store but my fairway virginity has been taken and I just spent $300 on an impressive selection of organic meats,  dairy and fruits and veggies for my family. Not to mention a few delectable packaged goods for a sweet tooth or carb crave. This place was an experience. The butcher, the baker, the clerk and the man sweeping the floor also make this place a delight. My son had a fabulous time exploring the grounds and hi-fiving the hard working team that make up this Mecca of grandiose artwork of scrumptious goods. Way to go fairway. This is only the beginning of our long term relationship. There is no turning back :-)

The new Manhattan Fairway supermarket is such an awesome addition to the Kips Bay Towers shopping plaza. This store is just close enough for me to walk to from my office!

The market is located in the basement of the shopping complex. Only the floral section is on the ground floor level.
There are escalators, elevators and stairway to get down to the base.
Everything you want and need is available here.
The prices are reasonable and the selections are fantastic.
The staff is well trained and friendly.

Just like the Fairway I normally go to in Red Hook Brooklyn and Douglaston Queens in has a bakery, olive bar, amazing coffee selection and olive oil sampling. (I saw one guy made a whole meal sampling all the balsamic vintage & bread.

Checkout section is configured differently to save space and can be confusing at first. The space is a little tight but reasonable. The weekends are probably crazy crowded.

Parking is metered and there is a Citibike station nearby.
The M15 downtown bus is at the corner of 30th  St & 2st Ave with the M15+Select bus stop located on 33rd St & 2nd Ave.
The closes subway is a hike to Park Ave. #6 train.

This Fairway is way better than the UES location. First, the layout is amazing and huge! It's spacious and it didn't feel or seem crowded. The employees actually asked me if I needed help and I was in an out in no time. I felt like they had a better selection too. It's wasn't fun to carry my bags 9 blocks home, but totally worth it.

Staff is SO helpful and SO friendly here.  They know where everything is in the store.  The prepared food section is awesome and so is the deli area. Prices are insanely affordable.

This Fairway is an awesome addition to the neighborhood !  I'm in and out of here quickly..well, nearly every other day but that's the way I shop in general.

A lovely balance of everyday items and brands alongside the fru-fru, organic-ish that I adore :)
