Peacefood Cafe--what a Village sounding place

There is more than one outlet for this, but "Peacefood Cafe" has a real Greenwich Village ring to it...

You cannot tell from the outside what is going on here except the tony understatement seems to say this place is not inexpensive...

Well, let's close here tonight on Yelpers going on about Peacefood:

WELL, WELL, WELL...VEGAN AND GLUTEN FREE

ALL RAVES EXCEPT FOR A SOUR APPLE AND SOME GUY TRYING TO BE FUNNY...

This vegan joint was a stellar find when some friends and I were trying to find a convenient place to meet up around Union Square.

The menu has lots to choose from for being a cafe, including lots of appetizers, smoothies, fresh juices, salads, sandwiches, pizza, soup and specials like chili with cornbread - mmm!

We ordered the dumplings, which were pretty tasty, but I'm a tough dumpling critic. I also ordered a smoothie, I can't remember the name, but it had chocolate, banana, peanut butter and espresso. I was hoping it would come first, but maybe they forgot it, because it didn't come along until I was finished with our dumplings.

I ordered the japanese pumpkin sandwich as a main, which had a nice crunch. It had just the right amount of everything, but the spinach could have been spread more evenly on the sandwich; it was in somewhat of a lump in the middle of my sandwich. The spinach situation was fixed easy enough by poking it around a bit with my finger - not a deal-breaker.

The deal-maker? Vegan "not-cronuts"! (They can't call them cronuts for legal reasons, but I sure can! It was delicious. Though I haven't had the opportunity to try the real deal and compare, I would recommend any vegan with a hankering for both donuts and croissants go here now and buy this pastry. Well, maybe not "now." Check if they're open first. Buy one as soon as you can.
    • Dumplings! So yummy and fresh
    • Japanese pumpkin sandwich was crazy flavorful

    The best vegan food ever!
The juices are so so good.  Try the green lemonade or the ginger one...

All the deserts are delicious too.  The brownies, cheesecake, tiramisu, strawberry shortcake...make sure you get there earlier in the day because they will sell out of the goodness!

I love the new space!  The original Peacefood is one of my favorite lunch spots, and now that I'm moving downtown I'm so glad to have Peacefood Downtown to frequent.
My first, and so far my only, visit to Peacefood 2.0 was great; my girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch around 11:30 and the place was mostly emily except a few people working on their laptops.  My girlfriend was running a few minutes later then I and the wait staff had no problem with me sitting there for almost 30 minutes waiting, they brought me water, chatted with me, were generally nice.  I ended up ordering a mocha breakfast smoothie since I was pretty hungry but didn't want to order food before my g/f got there.  It was awesome.  Sometimes when I get smoothies with cocoa powder in them they don't taste that great, but not this time.  This smoothie was the perfect mix of coffee, chocolate, and non-dairy milk/banana.  I think my only complaint was that it could have been colder, but it wasn't blended with ice and I think that's really the only way to make that happen.
Anyway, my g/f finally got there and we ordered.  The menu is mostly the same as Peacefood uptown, so everything is delicious.  I noticed a few new things, but it could just be that I haven't been to Peacefood in a while and they added some new things.  Regardless, I got my favorite tempeh avocado sandwich; my g/f got the seitan medallion sandwich, and we spit an order of chickpea fries.  Everything was wonderful, both sandwiches were amazing - the seitan sandwich was much saltier then the tempeh but in a delicious way.  The chickpea fries were great, as always, although for the money I could have done with a larger portion.
I'll definitely be back; I love Peacefood and am never dissatisfied eating there.  I bring all my friends to Peacefood; if there was a way for me to buy stock in Peacefood I would.  That's how much I love it here.
"Why only 4 stars?", you ask.  The price.  2 sandwiches, 1 order of chickpea fries, and a small smoothie was $50+  It's like: come on Peacefood I know you don't need to charge me $7 for a small smoothie that I guarantee it costs $1 to make.  I know that the space is likely expensive, and that the ingredients used are good quality, and that the food I'm eating is pretty healthy.  But still...

I am not vegan, I am not vegetarian, I love meat.

All that being said, I really loved this place!  One of my best friends is vegetarian and whenever we go out I like to try out new things with her.  She had never been to this place, and I work next door to it so I figure I would try it out for dinner!

I went there two times before the meal that blew my mind, and kept on coming back.

    1. the Juices are delish!  I got the green lemonade.  YUM!
    2. I got ginger tea on a day that I was feeling a lil under the weather and it was so good!  It was almost broth-like!  And I felt better afterward!

Okay now for the day I went for a full on meal (that I could eat on repeat):

    Drink:  Gingerade.  Oh.My.Goodness.  DRINK IT!

Appetizer:  chickpea fries.  WOW.  just WOW.

Entree:  Charlie Brown Rice.  It was a heaping pile of some of the most tastiest guac I've had (EVER!) with brown rice and a yummy red bean stuff.  So good!

This is what killed me and almost made me feel that I had attained enlightenment...food enlightenment:  RAW KEYLIME PIE.  Holy moly!!  I would get a whole pie if I could.  SOOOOOOOOOOOO good!  Doesn't "feel" raw, and tastes so damn delicious.

The prices are moderate, but for the care they put into preparing these great meals, it's worth it.  give it a shot, please!

By far one of my favorite restaurants in NYC -- and I am not Vegan by any means!

The place is intimate with a cleanly feel and an unspoken modesty to their vegan-infused, 'love-for-all-animals' mentality. I dig it. Great spot to bring a group or dine with a friend, or you can simply catch up on a book in a quiet corner.

I ordered the vegan mushroom dumplings -- to die for! -- and my friend got some thai curry tofu special which I didn't try since I'm kind of nervous about green curry. He LOVED it tho and my dumplings absolutely killed my carb craving without being too much.

For dessert we shared the RAW coconut-milk/cashew cheesecake. I see images of this type of cake litter my clean-eating instagram buddies and I needed to try it since I will never make it on my own. Definitely a different taste and not for the faint of heart for people who are scared of trying new foods, but that cheesecake was unbelievably orgasmic. I just suffered through my too-full-about-to-die food-coma and kept shoving it down.

    Peacefood Cafe is the tits.

This is quite possibly some of the worst vegan/vegetarian food I have ever had. I've been three times and I'm not going back.

The food is bland, not filling, and very unappetizing. Eating Vegan/Vegetarian/Gluten Free doesn't mean you give up eating delicious and filling food.

The vegetable dishes are roasted (no seasoning) or steamed (Who eats steamed vegetables?!?! My grandmother, thats who.)

The chili was bland, the spelt bread is gross, the salads are wilted and tasteless.

The raw lasagna was a disgusting mound of cashew butter sandwiched between thinly sliced pieces of what appeared to be zuchini, and was drowned in the most tasteless tomato sauce I have ever eaten.

Way to fail at making vegan taste good Peacefoods.

You need to try their faux chicken tenders - they taste just like how I remember the ones from Burger King!
