      Thursday November 6, 2015.
Friday, November 13, 2015   Three years after Hurricane Sandy, the firefighters of Station No. 2 are still displaced, and living in a trailer they say has become mold- and rodent-infested.

“As union president, I’m fed up with it,” said John Murphy, who represents the city’s 58 full-time firefighters in Local 4032 of the International Association of Firefighters. “To be sitting in that building three years after the storm, the only city building that hasn’t been fixed, is an embarrassment and an insult.”

“I don’t know if either is accurate,” Business Administrator James Mallon said of reports of mold and rodents at the trailer. “Certainly we want a safe, healthy place for our firefighters.”

When Sandy inundated the cinderblock building at the corner of 29th Street and West Avenue on Oct. 29, 2012, the ground-floor living quarters of Station No. 2 were destroyed. Since then, Murphy pointed out, the city has restored City... [ more ]

APPARATUS CRASHES - A LEADING CAUSE OF FF DEATH

Friday, November 13, 2015  Lights flashing and siren blaring, the ambulance stopped at a red light, checking for traffic. The firefighter at the wheel eased forward. Halfway through the intersection, his partner saw the truck.“I said, ‘This is going to hurt,’ ” Montgomery County firefighter Robert Sito, 27, told accident investigators later that day at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. Engine 723, headed to the same call for a hazardous material spill, was coming their way at an estimated 44 mph.

The impact shattered the front end of the ambulance and sent it spinning across the roadway. Firefighter Michael Matteo, the 34-year-old driver, was knocked unconscious. He, Sito and two firefighters from the truck went to the hospital with injuries that ranged from minor to severe.

The crash in the Aspen Hill neighborhood was one of 241 accidents involving Montgomery County Fire and Rescue vehicles last year, a number that officials say is excessive and troubling. County fire and rescue ve... [ more ]

FAMILY OF KEVIN BELL FILES WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT

Thursday, November 12, 2015  The family of fallen firefighter Kevin Bell filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Hartford, the Hartford fire chief, the commander on the scene and the Lieutenant who left Bell in the home.Bell died in a fire last October 7. Family members held a press conference with their attorney, Paul Levin, Thursday morning. The lawsuit will be filed in Hartford Superior Court.

The family claims that Bell was left behind in the house by his supervisor, Lt. John Moore. Bell ran out of breathing air in his tank.

The suit claims that equipment and system failures lead to Bell’s death. Also the department failed to do proper training and equipment maintenance.

In addition, the suit alleges that the firefighters entered the building that night with substandard equipment, that was known to the command staff.

The mayday call issued by Lt. Moore went unheaded and the resulting search by the tactical team was delayed, according to the suit.

THUMB INJURIES SOAR AT FDNY - CLAIMS DUE TO APPARATUS DESIGN

Wednesday, November 11, 2015  Several of New York’s Bravest would give a thumbs down to their new trucks — if they could move them.
A rash of injured thumb complaints have hit the New York City Fire Department after the Kovatch Mobile Equipment (KME) manufactured trucks rolled out in October, court papers say, and now five firefighters are planning on filing suit against the city over their damaged digits.
The firefighters say in court filings that the KME rigs have heavy doors with handles that are too close to the hinges — and all five say they’ve suffered serious thumb injuries as a result. They claim that the KME rigs have heavy doors with handles that are too close to the hinges“The accidents and injuries are remarkably similar,” wrote their lawyer, Dana Cutting.
“Firefighters who were closing the driver’s side door crushed their left thumb and firefighters who were closing the passenger’s side door crushed their right thumbs.”
An FDNY spokeswoman said adjustments... [ more ]

IL FF INJURED AT TRAINING

Tuesday, November 10, 2015   The Huntley Fire Protection District transported one of its own employees to an area hospital for injuries sustained during a training activity, fire officials said Friday.

At about 11 a.m., the district was called to its own training tower at Coyne Station and Ernesti roads for an injured subject, according to scanner reports.

Huntley Fire Lt. Ken Larson confirmed it was a Huntley firefighter who was injured during a training activity. He would not specify how the patient was injured, but said any injuries were not life-threatening.

The firefighter was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

The training tower facilitates methods firefighters can hone their skills by putting out live fires and other such activities.

Given the intensity of some of the training, Larson said "injuries do occur from time to time."

The incident was accidental and will not require any sort of investigation, he added

WHY DID THE FIREFIGHTER PROTECTIVE SHELTERS FAIL?

Tuesday, November 10, 2015  With flames swirling all around them, four firefighters trapped on a narrow Lake County ridge during the first hour of what would become the state’s third-most-catastrophic wildfire made the last-ditch decision most avoid at all costs: Seek refuge in emergency fire-resistant shelters.“The ground was on fire,” Cal Fire firefighter Niko Matteoli said. “It didn’t need to be verbalized; we all knew immediately the intensity of the situation and we all just acted. There was no hesitation.”

But at that critical moment, with their faces already burned, firefighters Matteoli, 24, of Santa Rosa and Logan Pridmore found the outer packaging of the standard-issue shelters carried by wildland firefighters across the country had melted. Matteoli removed his gloves and tore away the molten plastic with his bare hands, and eventually he and Pridmore hid from the heat under one aluminum cocoon.

GET TO KNOW THE NEIGHBORS. THE ONES WHO DIED LAST WEEK.

Sunday, November 8, 2015  I sure hate to put it this way but the reality is that nearly every week another Firefighter, Police Officer, EMT, service worker or community resident is dying from World Trade Center/9/11 related disease. Some are literally fading away as they pass away. Neighbors, Friends, Brothers & Sisters. They are dying from the toxic dust that everyone was told was not dangerous. Remember that? How'd that work out?

My words aren't at all meant to be disrespectful to those who have died - or will, moreover they are meant to get those ignorant Federally elected officials to understand that supporting the needs of the responders is what they were elected to do-take care of those who take care of us without wheeling, dealing, cutting and game playing. People are fed up and tired of game playing inside the beltw... [ more ]

The 34-year-old was propelled from the crosswalk into the intersection, where he somehow wound up underneath the truck. "I was standing here. I heard the firefighter say, 'Stay still! Stay still! That's how I knew something was wrong," said Ram Roland, a bouncer at a nearby bar. "I saw him underneath the truck. I was like, 'How the hell did this dude get underneath this truck?!'"
The man attempted to get up – but firefighters screamed at him to stay still, witness Tony Myagi said.

1 CA FF BURNED AT APARTMENT FIRE

Saturday, November 7, 2015  Fire raged through two Anaheim townhome fourplexes before dawn Friday, forcing residents to grab their children and pets and run for their lives.Firefighters converged on the two blazing buildings and poured in streams of water but by the time the fire was out the damage appeared complete and more than 40 people had lost their homes.

More than four hours later, as the losses started sinking in, Jessica Diaz sat with her four kids and Chihuahua on a blanket spread on a patch of grass across the street from the still-smoldering Benmore Lane buildings. She wore a bathrobe and socks and was on her cellphone trying to make arrangements. Her kids cuddled the dog, Molly.

Diaz said her neighbor pounded on the door shortly before 6 a.m. to warn her of the fire, and she opened the door and saw smoke and flames in the alley that runs through the townhouses, which all open to the outdoors.

"I ran back upstairs and grabbed the kids by their legs and literally... [ more ]
