Thursday, November 26, 2015   Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze that tore through a single-story paper recycling plant in on Page Avenue on Thursday. Two firefighters were taken from the scene with heat exhaustion and a third suffered a minor leg injury, authorities said.A skeleton crew of two workers who were at the NYNJ Recycling plant at 800 Page Ave. when the fire broke out escaped without injury, said Chief Paul Haggerty of the Lyndhurst Fire Department.

The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. and quickly went to a third alarm. At one point, the flames jumped across Page Avenue and caused minor damage to a plastics company in the industrial area, but firefighters managed to save that building, Haggerty said.

Part of the large, flat-roofed brick building that housed the recycling company collapsed during the fire. About 50 firefighters from Lyndhurst and surrounding communities battled the blaze, Haggerty said.

HAS YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT EVER EXPERIENCED A LINE OF DUTY DEATH? EVER? Please See Below

Thursday, November 26, 2015    We wanted to make YOU aware of the FFCC / Line of Duty Calendar Project. The goal is to create a single point of reference of fire service LODD and serious LODI events. Every name on the calendar is an opportunity to remember, reflect, and learn. In the wake of a loss it is an opportunity to train ourselves to be better and work to prevent future LODD / LODI events. By organizing these events in a calendar format we have the opportunity to make every day about training while not forgetting those who served us. There is no limitation on how far back the calendar can reach.

The initial efforts have focused on the United States and US Armed Forces but I'd like to gradually expand to North America and then perhaps globally.

KC AREA FIRE CAPTAIN THANKS RESCUERS AFTER MAYDAY

41 Action News Video
Thursday, November 26, 2015   Hot chunks of ceiling rained down on Alan Dugan. The sheet metal and plaster pinned the Grandview Fire Department captain inside a burning apartment.

He felt his body baking. Like he was locked in an oven growing hotter and hotter.

He attempted to yell “Mayday!” into his lapel-mounted microphone, positioned near his left clavicle. But the universal distress signal of firefighters came out of his mouth more like a gasp. His body was bent in an awkward crouching position that constricted his airway.

Smoke surrounded him. Even if he could free himself, he wasn’t sure which way was out. He couldn’t see a door or a window. Before the ceiling fell, the buddy who’d entered the second-floor apartment with Dugan had retreated back outside to unkink their fire hose.

No other firefighters were nearby.

As he looks back today on 2 minutes and 30 seconds of being trapped, Dugan realizes he has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.<... [ more ]

The widow and mother of Eric Stein, 36, have filed a suit against L.A. County and the fire truck's driver, Michael Aplanalp, according to City News Service.
The tragic incident took place on July 31, when Stein was driving along Mulholland Highway in Agoura Hills to a rehearsal dinner for his brother's wedding where he would have been the best man. Stein went to make a left turn on to Saddle Rock Ranch when an L.A. County fire truck passed him on the left and smashed into the driver's side of Stein's Ford Focus. Stein died at the scene and his wife, Knesia Rozen, was airlifted to a hospital.
The fire truck was a camp-crew vehicle transporting 13 female inmates from Malibu's Fire Camp 13, where inmates aid in fire-relief efforts. The truck had its lights and sirens on as they were on their way to battle a fire in Sherman Oaks.

Firefighters: ‘Slow down’ near crash scenes

WOODTV.com Video
Tuesday, November 24, 2015   Blocking traffic as other emergency responders deal with a traffic accident isn’t the most exciting assignment for firefighters, but it’s a necessity — one that makes them sitting ducks when it comes to crashes. That was the case Saturday morning for the crew of the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s Ladder 3, which was called to a crash on I-196 near Lake Michigan Drive.

“We arrived on scene to be their blocker, just to protect them until our utility could get on scene, which is our dump truck with a trailer,” GRFD Lt. Matt Keusch explained.

But as Keusch and his crew sat in their truck, which was angled across westbound I-196, some drivers still weren’t paying attention.

Equipment Operator Justin Holmes saw one vehicle headed straight for the rig, despite the flashing lights and chevron safety stripes painted on the back. Holmes told Keusch and the rest of the crew to brace themselves as he put the truck in gear to try to get out of the ... [ more ]
