Intoxicated teen steals ambulance, attacks cops - Colorado

Thursday, November 12, 2015  FORT COLLINS, Colo. — An 18-year-old who stole an ambulance, committed indecent acts and attacked two deputies told police he had taken MDMA and cocaine the night the incident happened.

Stefan Sortland stole an ambulance early on Nov. 1 after being kicked out of a concert. Medics from Poudre Valley Hospital were treating an intoxicated student on a Colorado State University campus when the ambulance was stolen, The Denver Channel reported.

Police later found the ambulance, using its GPS, in the middle of a highway with several doors open, front-end damage and fluid leaking. An officer said it appeared the driver hit the raised median, jumped the curb, hit a sign, went the wrong way and crossed back over the median before stopping.

Sortland was found 30 yards away wearing an EMT vest. Police shot him with a stun gun when he didn’t follow their orders and took him into custody. Sortland had with him a cellphone, a blanket and a box of Wheat Thins.

At the Loveland Police Department, Sortland "stood on a bench, kicked the wall and masturbated."

Later while in the booking area at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Sortland attacked two deputies who were bringing him lunch, allegedly punching one in the face.

Man shoots at firefighters during medical call - California

Thursday, November 12, 2015  HESPERIA, Calif. — A 33-year-old Victorville man was arrested for allegedly shooting at firefighters early Tuesday morning during a medical aid call.

Dajuan Kendall was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon just after 7 a.m. at a home in the 13000 block of Sundown Road, in Victorville, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s booking records.

The incident took place around 1 a.m., after San Bernardino County firefighter paramedics were called to a home in the 7700 block of E Avenue, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s and fire reports.

Firefighters were speaking to a woman at the home when her boyfriend, later identified as Kendall, allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot once into the air and then at the firefighters. No one was hit and Kendall reportedly drove off immediately afterward.

Fire officials confirmed the incident and said sheriff’s detectives are investigating. It’s unclear what led up to the shooting.

Through investigation, officials learned that Kendall’s true identity was different from what his girlfriend knew him as, according to a statement.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Station in Victorville assisted in finding Kendall.

When fire personnel are summoned to a crime scene, they typically wait until law enforcement states it is safe to enter, explained Tracey Martinez, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Tuesday morning’s call, however, was a routine medical aid call which didn’t require sheriff’s deputies to clear a scene before fire personnel began to render aid.

“This is an uncommon incident,” she said.

Jessamine County Paramedic Dies, Escorted Home - Kentucky

Thursday, November 12, 2015  A long line of police cruisers, fire trucks and ambulances led paramedic John Mackey, who died after a crash on the job, back home to Nicholasville Monday afternoon.

The Facebook page Supporting Heroes announced that Mackey was taken off life support and died around 10:00 Monday morning. The family says per his wishes, they donated his organs in hopes of saving others.

"John has been in the EMS community for 16 years and has been saving lives all that time, and he is going to continue to save lives by being an organ donor," said Jessamine County EMS Chaplain Kevin Davidson.

Mackey was one of two paramedics driving an ambulance to a run at the Jessamine County Detention Center last week. As the ambulance was headed down Main Street, its mirrors swiped mirrors with a pickup headed the opposite direction. The ambulance pulled over to inspect the damage, while the pickup kept going.

Police say Mackey stepped out in the road between two parked vehicles and was hit by the 17-year-old driver of a car who had just started moving as the light she'd been sitting at turned green. Investigators say there was no time for her to react, and they call this a terrible accident.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help the family. Click here for more.  Jessamine County EMS is also suggesting that if you have a green light bulb that you put it in an outside light or window to show support for Mackey, as green is the color associated with paramedics.

Jessamine paramedic John Mackey dies after being taken off life support; organs donated - Kentucky

Thursday, November 12, 2015  BY GREG KOCHER AND MORGAN EADS

gkocher1@herald-leader.com

Jessamine County paramedic John Mackey, who was struck by a car last week, died Monday, and his former supervisors remembered him as a caring professional.

"He was a great employee, a dependable employee," said Jerry Domidion, former director of Jessamine County's Emergency Medical Services. "He was fun to be around and he took his job seriously.

"He was one that liked to joke and kid and cut up, but when it came time for patient care he was one to take his job seriously and do the patient care that needed to be done." .

Mackey, 40, was struck by a car on East Maple Street in Nicholasville on Thursday night as he stepped into the street from between two parked cars, Nicholasville police said. Survivors include his wife, Janine, and three children.

"He was bigger than life but if he ever dealt with children he was a big teddy bear," Domidion said. "The kids could relate to him."

Wendell Hatfield, another former Jessamine EMS director, said Mackey had a dry, quick-witted sense of humor. "He was so dry it kind of caught you off guard. It would take you about five or 10 minutes to realize what he was alluding to," Hatfield said.

Mackey was a regular at Renaissance festivals and enjoyed expressing his Scottish heritage and wearing kilts.

"He wore those quite a bit," Hatfield said.

His close-knit group of friends, to whom he was simply "Mackey," took to Facebook in an outpouring of remembrances of his warm, down-to-earth personality.

Jessamine County Judge-Executive David West announced during a vigil Sunday that Mackey was not expected to survive and probably would be taken off life support Monday.

The Jessamine County Emergency Management Agency announced Mackey's death in the following Facebook post:

"Over the past few days our community has experienced the pain of knowing one of our own lay fighting for his life at UK Hospital.

"I have witnessed prayer, compassion and support for paramedic John Mackey's family and the emergency services family of Jessamine County by the thousands.

"This fight was too much for John to battle on his own along with the injuries he sustained when he was struck by a vehicle in downtown Nicholasville.

"John has stepped out of the ring and thrown down the gloves not before giving his all in one last lifesaving act of donating his organs to someone else who may be lying in some other hospital waiting for a match.

"John Mackey will live on in our hearts and we shall never forget him or his contributions to this community."

Betts & West Funeral Home in Nicholasville is in charge of funeral arrangements.

John Mackey has been identified as the EMS worker who was injured. He was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Nicholasville Police say the accident happened around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of York St. and E. Maple St.

Mackey, 40, then walked out from between two parked vehicles and was struck by a vehicle that had turned onto E. Maple St. Initial investigation indicates that the driver of that vehicle was 17-years-old.

The other EMS worker gave immediate aid to Mackey on the scene and he was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was checked on the scene but appeared to be unharmed. Officer Grimes said the initial investigation determined the driver was not at fault.

Mackey has worked at Jessamine County Emergency Services since 2003.

West said Mackey was dependable and he would "put in extra time to take care of people here."

Rick Hartley, 63, was riding in the back of an ambulance on Highway 287 outside Springfield, Colorado just before 7 p.m. Friday, when State Patrol says the driver collided with a tractor. The force of impact pushed the ambulance into the opposite lane of traffic, then caused it to roll off the road, ending up on its top. Hartley suffered severe injuries, and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

We're told Hartley taught a CPR class and offered it free to anyone in the community. He also organized the county-wide injury prevention program for school age-children and was a champion of suicide prevention and awareness.

Hartley founded the Springfield EMS Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the local ambulance service in fundraising and education.

He also served on the State Advisory Council on Emergency Medical Servicesfor the state of Colorado and was a member of the Southeastern Colorado Regional Emergency Trauma Advisory Council.

Those who knew him and worked with him sent us these statements.

“Rick embodied the spirit of what EMS is meant to be: professionalism, compassion and a lot of hard work. A true hero if ever there was one, and a great mentor to me.” – Cherilyn England, EMT-I at SECH Ambulance Service

“Rick Hartley was our teacher, mentor, and friend. He was a man filled with deep compassion and strong love for helping others. Our lives will never be the same without Rick, and he will be so greatly missed every single day.” –Rachel Harmon, EMT-I at SECH Ambulance Service

UPDATE 11/7/15 3:45 p.m.

The Medical Director for the Southeast Colorado Hospital EMS, Antonio Manalo, M.D., sent us the following statement Saturday afternoon.

It is with a heavy heart that I make this statement. The passing of Rick Hartley has left a massive void in our community. I’ve known Rick since I came to Springfield in 1977.
Rick began his career in EMS in the late 1980’s after attending one of my classes. I knew Rick would be a successful EMT based on his enthusiasm and passion. Rick soon advanced to the level of EMT-Intermediate and finally accomplishing his dream of becoming a Paramedic.
Rick took over as EMS Director for Southeast Colorado Hospital EMS in 1992. Rick’s hard work and dedication has been instrumental in establishing and continuing to provide an advanced level of pre-hospital care to the citizens of Baca County.
Rick’s passing has been detrimental to our organization. I’d like to thank Rick for all he’s done, all that has been accomplished in this service has been due to his selflessness and compassion. I’d like to give my condolences to Rick’s family in their time of grief and request their privacy be respected during this difficult time. The people of Baca County have lost a true hero who gave his lifelong service within and outside of the hospital.
