STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A large number of firefighters have been summoned to Oakwood Beach Friday afternoon to battle a brush fire.
The blaze is located about 100 yards into an area of brush at Mill Road and Kissam Avenue.
Thick black smoke billowing from the fire is visible on the East and South shores for miles.
Strong winds are aiding in the spread of the smoke and threatening to spread the flames as well. One firefighter on the scene estimated the winds at 40 mph.
Thirty-three units and 140 firefighters are on the scene, according to an FDNY spokesman. The blaze was first reported at 1:13 p.m.
No injuries have been reported at this time, the spokesman said.
A helicopter is flying over the scene.
The city's Notify NYC line sent out an alert on the blaze and the following warning:
"The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advises avoiding smoke exposure from brush fires by closing windows while indoors and reducing outdoor activity where smoke is present. People with heart or breathing conditions such as asthma may be more sensitive and should seek immediate medical attention if they experience a worsening of their condition, shortness of breath, or chest pains."

Is that what all the fire trucks are about? I can hear all that here Mid Island by the Mall. With all these sirens everyday this damn Island is starting to sound like a scene out of "The Wire".

@genx123 Blame your everyday Staten Island motorist. With all the people doing their level best to cut them off and beat them to the intersection they have to keep their horns and sirens blaring to cover their butts when the dummy on his cell phone broadsides them because he doesn't think he has to stop or make way for emergency vehicles.
