City Politicians Accuse Salvation Army of Illegal Rentals
The Salvation Army has been accused of illegally renting rooms"hotel-style" to seniors at its Williams Memorial Residence on the Upper West Side.
According to The Daily News, the Williams has a long tradition of leasing out "guest rooms" to friends and families of the building's residents. However, that practice is illegal, since the building fails to comply with many standard hotel regulations. The Department of Buildings issued the violation on Wednesday after Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer —a noted hater of illegal hotels—called for an investigation.
The Salvation Army is planning to sell its Williams Memorial Residence on the Upper West Side for $108 million and use the money to build a new senior housing facility along with a community center on East 125th Street. The seniors currently housed in the old center would be guaranteed a spot in the new one, although, predictably, many of the elderly residents are not thrilled about the idea of moving to East Harlem.
