FIRE COMMISSIONER DANIEL A. NIGRO PRESIDES AT GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 72 EMTS AND THE PROMOTION OF 2 DEPUTY CHIEFS AND 13 CAPTAINS

Monday, September 28 FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the graduation of 72 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and the promotion of 2 Captains to the rank of Deputy Chief and 13 Lieutenants to the rank of Captain in Brooklyn.
“The Department is responding to more medical emergencies than ever before and these newly graduated EMTs will be joining the EMTs, Paramedics and Firefighters already providing outstanding patient care throughout the five boroughs,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Through their years of training and experience, these newly promoted Chiefs and Captains will lead our new EMTs and help ensure the continued excellent work of our Department.”

“We have given you the skills, the equipment and the knowledge, but it’s up to you to get the job done,” said FDNY Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “Stay focused - and with every response - you will become a better EMT.”
FDNY EMTs are trained for 10 weeks at the EMS Academy in all aspects of their job as Emergency Medical Technicians: CPR; patient medical and trauma assessments; oxygen and ventilation skills; management of hypotension and fractures; and spinal immobilization and emergency childbirth; and emergency vehicle operation.
“Today’s a great day. We put in a lot of hard work - everything we learned over the past 10 weeks, we are finally getting a chance now to go out on the road and save lives, and represent the FDNY,” said newly graduated EMT Patrick Cunningham. “Just to be a part of this organization is a true honor, it’s a blessing. I am excited for myself and my classmates and now the real work begins.”
Seven foreign languages are spoken by this diverse group of graduates, including: Bulgarian, Cantonese, Hebrew, Polish, Punjabi, Russian and Spanish. These new graduates will be assigned to various units throughout the city.
