I can't remember when this calendar thing started ( all sorts of people have done similar calendars for all sorts of causes)
As far as I know, the FDNY one was the first, but I remember seeing one for the Houston FD ages and ages ago
Firemen who pose for the calendar set themselves up for a lot of ribbing from their colleagues, who then often say to them later "Uh, how can I find out if I can get on the calendar?"

FDNY RELEASES OFFICIAL 2016 CALENDAR OF HEROES
FDNY Released the Official 2016 Calendar of Heroes at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square
Wednesday, July 29, Firefighters from the Official FDNY 2016 Calendar of Heroes signed purchased copies of the calendar at a launch event held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. This is the only official FDNY calendar and all proceeds from its sale go directly to the FDNY Foundation, to promote fire safety education for residents of New York City and to provide professional development, training and education for FDNY members.
"It's both a blessing and an honor, especially for this anniversary year for the Department. It's a great time to participate in the calendar with the Foundation,” said Firefighter Jamah Figaro of Ladder Company 22 in Manhattan. Firefighter Figaro is features on the calendar cover alongside the FDNY 150th Anniversary Fire Truck. He continued “And we are coming off a June that was fatality-free, so we know these Foundation programs are working, thanks to their hard work and the work of the brave men and women of the Fire Department."
This year’s calendar includes 13 active FDNY Firefighters at locations across New York City. Each month brings a fire safety message ensuring that each person who purchases the calendar can remain fire safe all year long.
“Hard Rock Cafe New York is proud to partner with the FDNY for the launch of its highly-anticipated 2016 Calendar of Heroes and honor the brave work of New York City’s first responders,” said John Pasquale, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hard Rock Cafe New York. “The calendar is a fun annual tradition and it made perfect sense to us to host the celebration at a location as iconic as Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square as we recognize the FDNY members who keep our city safe.”

The FDNY Foundation funds fire safety education programs which train more than 600,000 New Yorkers each year and free CPR classes which have trained more than 100,000 New Yorkers.
