FIRE COMMISSIONER DANIEL A. NIGRO PROMOTES 33 FIRE INSPECTORS

Tuesday, July 21, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided at a promotion ceremony for nine Deputy Chief Inspectors and 24 Senior Inspectors at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn. The 33 inspectors are members of the FDNY’s Bureau of Fire Prevention, which is tasked with preventing hazardous conditions by enforcing the Fire Code and addressing questions and concerns with regulations.
“The safety of all those who live in New York City, and all those come here to work or to visit is a responsibility you share with our Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs and Officers in the field,” said Commissioner Nigro. “Just last month, for the first time in the FDNY’s 150 year history, we celebrated the fact that a month on the calendar went by without a single New Yorker losing his or her life to fire. Your work has been instrumental as we have driven fire deaths to historic lows.”
“Your work is so valuable because quite frankly we don’t know when and where the next fire or emergency will take place,” said Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “When you prevent fires, and when alarm and sprinkler systems function properly, you have made the very difficult job of fighting fires just a bit easier.”
The Bureau of Fire Prevention’s more than 250 Inspectors are extensively trained in inspection oversight and reporting. The newly promoted Deputy Chiefs and Senior Inspectors will help lead the Bureau’s district offices and specialized units.
“I’m ready, I have always been ready, and the Bureau helped prepare me to supervise and interact with many more people,” said Jose Palacios, a 10-year veteran of the Department who was promoted to Supervisory Inspector. “Every single unit that we have has its own role. My unit inspects commercial kitchens, we give them permits and if there is not then it can be very dangerous, so we are helping keep people safe.”
