FASNY FIRE SERVICE COMMUNITY SERVICE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD HONORS FORMER WANTAGH FIRE CHIEF

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has named Wantagh Fire Department Ex-Chief, 89-year-old Donald E. Snyder as the recipient of the Fire Service Community Achievement Award for his community service reaching back to the 1950s.

For nearly half a century Don has served as commissioner of the Wantagh Fire District, overseeing advancements and improvements and coordinating many initiatives to bring the Wantagh Fire Department up to speed in an era of newtechnology, making all Wantagh residents safer. He is a 64-year member of the Wantagh Fire Department.

Don has contributed far more additional service to his community through other organizations and outlets – which together with his volunteer firefighting service – so richly credentialed him for the FASNY Community Service Award.

Don has been deeply involved in many aspects of his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Levittown, serving as Deacon, Elder and Usher, and rarely missing a Sunday service.

Don retired as a teacher from Farmingdale High School, where he coached many of their football and wrestling teams to local, county. and state championships and to this day remains involved with many of Farmingdale High’s sporting events and their sports-related organizations.

For serving as the district’s athletic director for 30 years, Don is widely known, with deep affection and admiration, as “The Coach”. In recognition of his devotion to the high school, as well as his winning records, the Farmingdale High School football stadium and physical education complex was named for Don.

He continues to serve on the Section VIII Athletic Council and is on the committee for the annual Gridiron Dinner where the outstanding players are honored each year. Don is Chairperson of the Appeals Committee of the Council where his firm, yet sensitive approach to the appeals process is well respected. He continues to be part of the Nassau County Football Coaches Association serving as their Treasurer.
