Firefighters responding to the call Wednesday evening encountered heavy fire showing on arrival and commenced an offensive attack. Command ultimately ordered crews to adapt a defensive posture and called a second alarm. Part of the structure collapsed around 8:53 p.m.
The fire at the two-story building of ordinary construction was placed under control in 50 minutes. There were no working smoke detectors.
A total of 14 IFD units and two City of Lawrence units responded.
