Der Spiegel: Berlin court rejects extradition of Al Jazeera journalist
23 June 2015 | 08:49 | FOCUS News Agency
Berlin. Prominent Al Jazeera journalist has escaped extradition to Egypt, where he could face the death penalty, after the prosecutor’s office in Berlin ruled Cairo’s judicial request did not meet requirements. The information was confirmed for Der Spiegel by the spokesperson of the prosecutor’s office.
The Al Jazeera journalist was arrested on Saturday at Berlin Tegel Airport, while attempting to fly back to Doha, where the television’s main office is located. The German police detained him at the insistence of Egypt, where he was sentenced in absentia to imprisonment of 15 years over participation in protests against then president Hosni Mubarak. His arrest led to an immediate public response, which made the authorities in Berlin examine the case carefully and “without delay”.
Mansour arrived last week in Germany to film his Without Borders programme. Some of the best experts in radical Islam, among whom was Guido Steinberg, took part in it.
